The country’s maternal health crisis goes far beyond the delivery room. New data shows that dangerous, unexpected birth complications often emerge weeks after the mother and baby leave the hospital, with Black patients experiencing these events at a rate 87% higher than white patients. We've taken a leadership role in tackling the cost of prescription drugs, and we're seeing results. For example, Highmark members taking abiraterone acetate, which is used to treat prostate cancer, are saving an average of $90 per month in out-of-pocket expenses for the medication through Highmark’s role with CivicaScript and a select specialty pharmacy. Since this lower cost generic became available in September 2023, savings for our members, customers and the health plan have approached $3 million — and that's just on one drug. Learn more about our initiative to lower costs and increase access to generic medications below.
