GrowNYC, a 501(c)3, serves 3 million New Yorkers each year, providing opportunities to make NYC truly livable.

About us

GrowNYC is a hands-on non-profit with a mission to empower all New Yorkers with equitable access to fresh, locally grown food and neighborhood green spaces, reduce waste, and care for the environment. GrowNYC was originally created in 1970 as the Council on the Environment of New York City (CENYC). Born out of the spirit of the first Earth Day, CENYC was initially a policy-based organization, writing comprehensive reports about quality of life issues like air quality, traffic, and noise. Today, we serve over 3 million New Yorkers annually through a robust network of sustainability programs and resources. Our programs focus our efforts on four key areas: Food Access & Agriculture, Green Spaces, Zero Waste and Education. Since 1970, GrowNYC has been rolling up its sleeves alongside NYC residents to: - Provide access to healthy, fresh, local food for all New Yorkers -Grow and maintain vibrant green spaces and community gardens. -Help New Yorkers recycle more and reduce waste. -Create the next generation of environmental leaders through hands-on education programs.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for the annual Grow for Change Gala on Tuesday, May 7! Together, we raised our glasses to celebrate the incredible achievements of GrowNYC and to honor two cherished members of our family. First up, we're thrilled to introduce the inaugural recipients of our new awards! Barry Benepe, the visionary and co-founder of our Greenmarkets nearly five decades ago, was entrusted with the Marian Sulzberger Heiskell Award. Named after our founder, this award recognizes individual leadership and dedication to making NYC greener, healthier, and more sustainable for all. Barry's impact on our city's environmental health and local food economy is truly remarkable, and we couldn't be more proud to celebrate his legacy. Additionally, we're excited to present Farm Credit East with the first-ever For the Love of New York Award! Their outstanding corporate commitment to the mission of GrowNYC and the betterment of our beloved city is truly inspiring. With their unwavering support, we're making strides toward the completion of our groundbreaking New York State Regional Food Hub. Barry's vision has shaped the landscape of sustainable agriculture in our city and beyond, and we're endlessly grateful for his contributions. Dive into the captivating journey of GrowNYC Greenmarket in the video below, featuring Barry Benepe sharing the vision he and his fellow co-founder Bob Lewis brought to life. Together, they've revolutionized how New Yorkers access fresh, locally grown food.

    Thank you, Barry Benepe!
