𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁: 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 & 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗰𝘀 As solar energy continues to be a key part of the energy transition, EPRI’s Technology Innovation is taking a closer look at #agrivoltaics (AV). AV may change land use considerations by combining solar energy generation with agricultural practices. This innovative approach not only enhances renewable power generation but also makes the most of valuable land resources. By integrating solar panels with crop cultivation or animal grazing, AV installations can generate significant net benefits compared to standalone PV or agriculture sites. A new Technology Innovation Spotlight examines how achieving these benefits requires careful management of shared resources while considering the variability of climate and market conditions. Factors like weather, solar irradiance, temperature, and moisture add layers of complexity to optimizing AV sites. #ArtificialIntelligence (AI) and #MachineLearning (ML) have emerged as tools to analyze and optimize AV. Learn more about the potential to make our energy and agricultural systems more sustainable in this publicly available document. #Sustainability #RenewableEnergy #SmartFarming https://lnkd.in/eF8Bawas

Talking to the National Conference of State Legislatures podcast, EPRI VP David Porter discusses a recent EPRI report looking at how the power needs of data centers will significantly increase due to AI — with an AI query requiring up to ten times more electricity than that of a standard Google search. To manage this growth, EPRI’s report emphasizes the need for better data center efficiency and flexibility, closer coordination between data center developers and power companies, and better modeling tools for grid investments. With these steps, our sustainable energy future can support the full potential of AI. Learn more in EPRI’s recent report 👉 https://lnkd.in/e26aqNpe. https://lnkd.in/eeEmYRhF

Europe's journey towards a sustainable energy future presents both challenges and opportunities. Success demands collaboration, innovation, and strategic research endeavors in this evolving environment. In this new Energy Central article, based on a recent episode of the #EPRICurrent podcast, Eamonn Lannoye, EPRI Europe Managing Director, and Norela Constantinescu, former Head of Innovation at the European Networks for Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E), discuss Europe's energy transition and the critical role of research, development, and innovation (RDI) in shaping sustainable energy systems not only for Europe but for the world. 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞: 📌 Integrating renewable energy into existing grid infrastructure is crucial, with an estimated €600 billion needed by 2030. 📌 Continuous innovation is vital for adapting to the rapidly evolving energy landscape and achieving 100% renewable energy integration. 📌 Collaboration and an ecosystem approach drive innovation across the EU’s diverse energy sector. 📰 https://lnkd.in/dYz2Y8nj

NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Artemis program hopes to reestablish human presence on the moon 🌕 — one of its first steps will be developing a Lunar Surface Power System (LSPS) to sustain it. That’s where CenterPoint Energy and EPRI come in. CenterPoint Energy has been supporting NASA’s mission and recently brought EPRI aboard to help with the planning of an LSPS! Our researchers have been working on two critical analyses: evaluating standards for electric system components and assessing system reliability. Overall, EPRI needed to address the unique challenges posed by the lunar environment. With temperatures ranging from -180C to +120C and extended periods of darkness, designing a robust power system is no small feat, to put it lightly. What we found is the importance of a Reliability Assessment Program (RPA) to inform decisions about redundancy, equipment protection, and maintenance strategies. Powering humans so far away just got a little closer! Learn more about our work on this incredible journey of lunar exploration. 🚀 https://lnkd.in/erSmbEZy

As fleet #electrification gains speed, trucking businesses are tasked with finding the right energy provider. During a recent American Trucking Associations meeting, industry leaders, including EPRI’s Mike Rowand, laid out important considerations for companies looking to electrify their fleets. Power 🔌 energy 🔋 and time ⏱️ will be important variables in the decision—as well as understanding the different provider types: investor-owned, electric cooperatives, and municipal power. But ultimately, collaboration between all stakeholders—the fleet operators, energy providers, government agencies, automotive industry and more—is required for the most effective electrification solutions. Fortunately, initiatives such as EPRI's #EVs2Scale2030 are already helping address this need by bringing various stakeholders together to ensure seamless #fleetelectrification.
