In EPRI's latest insight report, researchers study global and U.S. models to extract regional-specific steps for crafting practical, viable, and cost-effective strategies. #Decarbonization is not a one-size-fits-all solution—it requires different approaches for different regions and local energy operations. The study, using IPCC and EPRI's Low-Carbon Resources Initiative (LCRI) data, highlights key factors such as differences in wind and solar resource quality, CO2 storage, policy design, and other elements that can influence the path to net-zero. Authored by Steven Rose and Anahi Molar-Cruz, this resource aims to help remove uncertainty and provide a scientific basis for which to develop climate policy and company strategy and communication.

In a new article from IEEE Electrification Magazine, EPRI’s Jackie Baum explores how inexpensive industrial computing and secure telecommunications are advancing control of microgrid assets. These microgrids, operating in tandem, could help improve grid reliability, power outage recovery times, and the use of distributed energy resources.   As the number of microgrids increases, so will the need to optimize them. By coordinating nested and series-connected microgrids, the article explains, we can enhance the reliability of distribution systems and support critical operations that pave the way for a more resilient and reliable energy future.  Check out the full article to learn more 📢  https://lnkd.in/eKaSZJZW

Announced today, EPRI’s new Grid-Enhancing Technologies for a Smart Energy Transition Initiative (GET SET) aims to advance grid-enhancing technologies (GETs) to meet the growing demands on the U.S. electric grid. Through it, EPRI researchers will perform rigorous laboratory testing and facilitate deployment of GETs to increase the capacity, efficiency, reliability, and safety of existing transmission lines. As reflected by a recent workshop in Atlanta with more than 75 industry leaders— EPRI is collaborating with utilities, technology providers, and other stakeholders to identify priority research needs to assess and integrate these technologies into current and future transmission systems. Today's #climate and weather are becoming more extreme. The energy system is under continual pressure to improve #resiliency, #reliability, and flexibility during extreme weather and other events. These pressures present unique challenges that can impact customers. Hurricane Beryl, which left destruction behind in parts of the Caribbean, was the first Category 5 storm ever seen in the Atlantic Ocean in June. EPRI and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory conducted a study to look at how climate change could affect the risk of hurricane-induced power outages. The study's findings were featured in today's The New York Times. In the article, EPRI's Andrea Staid said utility companies along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts pay close attention to hurricanes. The analysis could help energy companies plan future improvements. "It motivates them even more because it shows what can happen if we don't adapt, if we don't take climate considerations into account when planning our energy system," said Staid. The energy transition demands the integration of distributed resources, customer energy use, and community energy management with electric power system planning and operation. This requires seamless coordination across diverse energy sectors like gas, water, heat, and transport. Collaboration among stakeholders is key, spanning organizations and technologies. Innovation must navigate the challenge of interoperability with legacy grid components, ensuring new solutions integrate smoothly with older technologies.
