Today, the Solar Energy Manufacturers for America (SEMA) Coalition testified at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative hearing on supply chain resilience. Executive Director Michael Carr emphasized support for effective trade policy to combat against the floods of cheap Chinese solar products and ensure a level playing field for U.S. solar manufacturers. “We see a geopolitical imperative in ensuring that a cartel of state-backed Chinese-headquartered firms do not dominate this sector, notably the capital-intensive wafer and polysilicon segments of the industry, as they do today." ICYMI: On Monday, May 13th, FERC is holding a special, ad hoc meeting to address a much-anticipated rulemaking on transmission planning & cost allocation. This rule stands to fundamentally transform how regional, long-distance transmission lines are planned & paid for. Plus, the Commission will be addressing an additional rulemaking on federal backstop siting authority for national interest transmission lines. Save the date!

This debate will continue for years to come. Siting criteria needs to consider all the impacts. It’s another case for nuclear power. Power density (land use per MW) and capacity factor don’t even compare.

Steve Everley, great chart showing how natural gas generation has led the way to lower emissions in the U.S. much more so than intermittent solar and wind. Its amazing the EPA is trying to limit new natural gas generation as a part of its GHG Rule released last week and somehow limit existing natuarl gas generation in other dockets. Florida is a perfect example of natural gas' role in emissions reductions. Florida has seen a 35% reduction in emissions from 2005 to today almost entirely due to switching from coal and oil to natural gas generation which now produced 75% of Florida's generation, by far the highest percentage in the U.S. Better yet, electric prices grew far less than in other states being below the U.S. residential price average in 2024 despite having no natural resource advantage like hydro, natural gas, coal or oil advantages. We at Florida Municipal Power Agency are putting our future on natural gas generation to provide affordable and reliable power for all while continuing to reduce emissions for decades to come.

The Crowell energy team, including myself, Tyler O'Connor, Kathryn Douglass and Kathy Dzienkowski managed to plow our way through the 1300+ pages of Order No. 1920 and have written this summary. Read our summary -- your eyes will thank you! In all seriousness, Order No. 1920 has four major take-aways: (1) transmission planning on a 20 year horizon with multiple scenarios; (2) increased transparency and stakeholder involvement in local transmission planning process, plus "right-sizing" of local projects; (3) consideration of unbuilt, recurring Network Upgrades in regional transmission planning; and (4) consideration of advanced transmission technologies.

Of particular relevance to BLM’s final rule, Title IV of CETA incorporates Levin’s Public Land Renewable Energy Deployment Act (H.R. 178). The title directs the Department of Interior to permit at least 60 gigawatts of renewable energy on public lands by 2030 and responsibly incentivizes this development on priority areas, while minimizing the adverse impacts to communities and the environment. https://lnkd.in/eFku_xgq

This is a reasonably good article summarizing the challenges facing the US offshore wind power industry. In particular, the challenges posed by the extensive permitting process at the federal, state and local levels and the lack of Jones Act-qualified wind installation vessels are the biggest obstacles to further development of offshore wind resources. I should add, however, that the author's characterization of many of the lawsuits brought to stop offshore wind development was very self-serving and obviously stems from his organization's hopes for achieving very substantial growth in the OSW industry. https://lnkd.in/gPBGSEjW
