DOE Study: AI Boom Breeds Localized Energy Constraints, But Grid Can Meet Long-Term Demand The "2024 Report to Congress on U.S. Data Center Energy Use" is designed to assess how surging interest in AI is impacting the technology industry’s use of electricity.  Preliminary results from the government study show that the surge in AI adoption and soaring AI demand has helped data center energy use in the U.S. double over the past three years, with another 50% growth likely by 2027. Demand for AI will likely alter the geography of digital infrastructure, but isn’t going to gobble up all the power on the electric grid, emphasized government researchers, including Dr. Arman Shehabi from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL - Berkeley Lab), part of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The Novo Nordisk Foundation enables a Game Changer for Danish Research 💡 Denmark could make an unprecedented leap in AI research capabilities. The Novo Nordisk Foundation, in partnership with EIFO, is bringing an NVIDIA-developed AI supercomputer to Denmark to accelerate diagnostic and medicinal innovation dramatically. Gefion ranks among the world's elite and the super computer will be among the worlds 5-6 largest. While there's been concern about data centers increasing electricity demand, this datacenters electricity consumption is a drop in the ocean compared to the existing 34 data centers in Denmark. Moreover, it arrives in an environment where possibilities for renewable energy electricity is vast - aviating new demands. If it sparks more AI supercomputers in Denmark, the electricity would be much greener than in central Europe 🌿⚡️. In 2018 forecasts, a higher than realized increase in demands from conventional hyperscale and co-location data centers was expected. Denmark's and Ireland's actual increase remains within expected boundaries.
