July is National Parks and Recreation Month! This month we celebrate building strong, vibrant, and resilient communities through the power of parks and recreation, and recognize our parks and recreation professionals who maintain our City's 9 parks. For our celebration, we created a video series to highlight three of our parks. First up, Etowah River Park, which is the location host to the River Rock Music Fest this Friday and Saturday! Explore Canton GA's Etowah River Park, and we hope to see you there this weekend! https://lnkd.in/e3vjxNPi #explorecantonga #cityofcantonga #cantonga

CANTON, GA (July 16, 2024) – History Cherokee and the City of Canton, Georgia, are pleased to invite the community to Burge Park on July 22 at 10:00 a.m. for the ribbon-cutting ceremony of a new historical marker commemorating the historic area known as Stumptown. The idea for the Stumptown historical marker originated with History Cherokee’s Black History Committee. History Cherokee staff then presented the idea to the City of Canton for funding. History Cherokee and members of the Black History Committee developed the marker and worked with the City of Canton to have it placed in Burge Park. The marker shares the history of Stumptown and its significance in Canton’s history. Continue reading at the link below: https://lnkd.in/eiCz5H_g #pressrelease #historycherokee

Special Notice: The City of Canton received unfortunate news earlier this week that Mark Chesnutt will no longer be able to perform as a headliner at River Rock Music Fest on Sat., July 27, due to health reasons. “It is with a heavy heart that I announce the cancellation of my upcoming shows,” announced Chesnutt. "I send my love and gratitude to my family and friends, the band and fans for your understanding, prayers and support, and look forward to seeing you all again soon at a honky tonk near you.” The City plans to work with Chesnutt's management company to secure a replacement headliner in the coming weeks. The new headliner announcement will be made soon.

Watch them succeed and be recognized. One of the great joys of leadership is watching your teammates grow and be recognized by their peers for the work they do, the talent they bring to the table, and the impact they make on their field. Bethany Watson, PE, AICP was just named as one of the Top 100 Most Influential Women in Engineering in Georgia. She will stay on that list because of the great impact she has in the City of Canton, Georgia. Securing grant funding for major projects, leading transformative initiatives in transportation and placemaking projects, and guiding our infrastructure into the next generation, Bethany is involved in so many things that help to shape Canton. I am very proud of her. The full magazine here: https://lnkd.in/eKWKcqmQ #icma #citymanager #cantonga #explorecantonga #engineering #gacities

It was an evening for rededication. We resolved to repurpose for ourselves a century old park. We invested in the evolution of our local sports, the diversity of our neighborhoods, and the natural environment of our land. With the help of Atlanta United FC, Georgia Impact (Shane Moore), Cherokee Youth Foundation (Cliff Hamilton), and an amazing staff (looking at you Bethany Watson, PE, AICP , Scott Hooper, Adam Dodson, Brittany Anderson, AICP, and Nathan Ingram), the City of Canton, Georgia and our leadership, Mayor Bill Grant and City Council, worked with youth to kick the ribbon on a new mini pitch soccer amenity. The Harmon Park renovation and expansion came in at $4.6m, but the smiles of our Sunnyside Community were priceless. Expanded Parking. Renovated baseball fields with new fencing, sod, lighting, and windscreens. New riverside trail. Connecting sidewalks. Riverside pavilion. New basketball court. New storm drainage. New mini-pitch. Stadium seating. Community gathering space. All new landscaping. #citymanager #icma #gacities #gacitiesweek2024 #explorecanton

April 1-5 is National Community Development Week, so we would like to recognize the programs and hard working individuals of the City of Canton who strive to keep our City moving toward the best future possible. "The work is more than just posting a yellow sign for a public hearing," explained City Manager Billy Peppers. "Professionals in our Community Development Department are charged with working within the parameters of state zoning laws and planning statutes, weighing the local desires for growth and development, and providing a fair and transparent process for those seeking to invest in the community. Our team transcends planning, zoning, housing, and code compliance to meet those challenges head on and deliver the community we all seek to call home." During National Community Development Week, the City of Canton and communities across the country celebrate the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME Investment Partnerships (HOME) programs. The goal is to bring renewed awareness to federal investment necessary to sustain these programs. One of the more recent CDBG grants the City of Canton received was for the renovation of Harmon Park (pictured). With the CDBG grant, the City was able to update field lighting, replace all rotten/damaged wood, add new roofs on buildings and dugouts, and add stadium seating along with a new viewing deck. Curbing and mulch were installed around the playground area, and new garbage cans, benches, and picnic tables were placed throughout the park. The park will celebrate it's Grand Re-Opening on April 23. #cantonga #cityofcantonga
