At Children's Mercy Kansas City, our Level IV NICU helps the most complex newborns develop into healthy kids. Kaydee, an energetic, horse-riding 10-year-old, started her journey as a premature newborn, weighing only 1 pound and 6 ounces. Baby Kaydee faced significant challenges, including severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and was transferred to our Level IV NICU at 4 months old. There, our NICU’s Chronic Lung Disease team, and Dr. Winston Manimtim, Director of the Infant Tracheostomy and Home Ventilator Program, provided the comprehensive care Kaydee needed to grow up strong. "Our practice has been to slowly transition to the home ventilator and let our patients guide us during the transition process," says Dr. Manimtim. This patient-centered approach, combined with multidisciplinary care and family support, helps even the most fragile infants overcome incredible odds. Today, Kaydee is breathing on her own and thriving on her family's ranch — a testament to the power of advanced neonatal care and the resilience of our youngest patients. It’s an honor to be one of the 10 children’s hospital hub sites for the Pediatric Pandemic Network (PPN), a program federally funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSAgov), HHS. As part of this, we recently hosted a team of government officials and pediatric preparedness experts from across the country. Here, they got to see firsthand how our team members prepare for the future and ensure all children will receive equitable access to healthcare during disasters, pandemics and emergencies. Join us in welcoming our 2024 Administrative Fellows, Juan and Larissa! They will rotate through several departments to develop their #HealthCareAdministration and leadership acumen. Juan is a Kansas City native who studied at the University of Pittsburgh. He is especially excited about community outreach and health equity and looks forward to immersing himself in the work Children’s Mercy does in those areas. Larissa, a University of Kansas Medical Center grad, is eager to reconnect with some of the team members she met last year during her internship at Children’s Mercy and dive into larger and more complex projects related to health care administration. Collaborative care across hospitals means better outcomes for mothers and babies with additional medical needs. 🤝 Our long-time partnership and connecting bridge with University Health KC helps moms like Aisha get specialty care at the Children’s Mercy Fetal Health Center (FHC) and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) – without even stepping outside. Aisha was pregnant with her third son, Wisdom, when her water broke at 32 weeks. After an evaluation at University Health Truman Medical Center, her care team there connected with our Fetal Health Center team and decided Aisha should be transferred to the FHC for ongoing care. Baby Wisdom had some developmental differences that Aisha’s doctor was monitoring prenatally. However, she kept her focus on the future and leaned on her faith, family and care team to get her through 3 weeks of painful early labor, an emergency C-section delivery, and 3 more weeks in the NICU with Wisdom. Wisdom, now 3 months old, is thriving at home, and Aisha was inspired to give back to Children’s Mercy by volunteering alongside others from the Walker Foundation at our patient prom event. ❤️ 💃 Read more of Aisha and Wisdom’s story: https://cmkc.link/3XIDDDS

When parents Julianne and Cody learned their almost 2-year-old daughter, June, would need to have surgery to correct her hip dysplasia, they immediately began researching to find the best hip surgeon in Missouri. The choice was clear: Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Lisa Berglund at Children’s Mercy. In addition to Dr. Berglund’s professional expertise, Julianne appreciated the way Dr. Berglund and the whole Hip Program team helped them feel at ease and explained things in a way that was easy to understand. Many of our volunteers say the #1 reason they give their time to us is because they want to give back to a place that’s helped someone they love. That’s the case for Cathy, who first got involved as a volunteer with one of our Parent & Family Advisory Committees and now serves as a NICU Family Support Volunteer. “We were in the hospital for what added up to about 9 months of my daughter’s first year of life,” Cathy shared. “There’s so much to process and learn – I just wanted to make it a little easier for those families and pay it forward for the support we received.” Volunteers of all ages and abilities are welcome and valued as part of our hospital community. The new Ronald McDonald House inside Children's Mercy is a special place at our Adele Hall Campus where ICU families can recharge while staying close to their child. 🛏️🌟 The space offers expanded amenities in a comfortable, home-like setting, including a living room area, a kitchen, bath and shower access and complimentary laundry facilities, all open 24/7. 🧸🚿 We are so grateful for our continued partnership with Ronald McDonald House of Kansas City, and proud to offer more support for families during the toughest times.

🎉 Milestone moment! 🎉 We’re thrilled to honor pediatric surgeon Dr. Richard Hendrickson, who recently completed a momentous milestone: performing his 100th liver transplant at Children’s Mercy! Even after so many cases, Dr. Hendrickson reminds the surgical fellows that each and every case is different and it’s an honor when families trust them to care for their precious children. Dr. Hendrickson credits the tremendous team it takes to make a transplant successful: the nurses, hepatologists, coordinators, patients, families and the donors themselves.
