👶 May is NEC Awareness Month! 👶 As we observe NEC (Necrotizing Enterocolitis) Awareness Month, let's shed light on its impact not just on infants, but on their families and healthcare teams too. NEC is a serious intestinal disease that primarily affects premature infants, but can also occur in full-term infants. Its effects can be devastating, leading to severe complications and even death if not promptly treated. For families, NEC brings immense stress and worry. Watching a newborn battle such a condition can be emotionally draining and financially challenging. It often disrupts the joyous early moments of parenthood and requires families to navigate a complex healthcare journey. On the healthcare front, NEC poses significant challenges for the medical team. Treating NEC requires a multidisciplinary approach involving neonatologists, pediatric surgeons, nurses, dietitians, and other specialists. Coordinating care, making critical decisions, and providing support to families demand not just medical expertise, but also compassion and empathy. This NEC Awareness Month, let's raise awareness about this condition and its ripple effects. The European Standards of Care for Newborn Health (ESCNH) provide comprehensive guidelines to help healthcare professionals deliver optimal care from the hospital to school age. This interdisciplinary collaboration brings together over 220 experts from 30+ countries to develop and update care standards in this and other critical areas of 𝐧𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞. The treatment and care of preterm babies are critical to ensure their healthy development. Upon birth, these fragile infants often require specialized neonatal care in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This includes monitoring vital signs, temperature regulation, and nutrition through intravenous or tube feedings. Preterm babies may need assistance with breathing, such as ventilators or CPAP machines, to support their underdeveloped lungs. Kangaroo care, where the baby is held skin-to-skin by the parent, helps with bonding and temperature regulation. Care extends beyond the NICU, involving early intervention programs, developmental assessments,follow-up care to address potential long-term health and developmental issues.
