Safer chemistry, science, data sharing, and collaboration

About us

ChemFORWARD is a science-based, non-profit, value chain collaboration to advance safer chemistry. We envision a world where all chemicals are vetted before use so that no more hazardous chemicals enter circulation, and existing hazardous chemicals can be systematically drawn down and replaced with safer alternatives, and ultimately green chemistry. Our mission is to be the globally trusted source of cost-effective chemical hazard data empowering supply chains to accelerate the transition to safer chemistry.

We are thrilled to support the next generation of chemists by announcing our efforts with Beyond Benign—Green Chemistry for a Sustainable Future and educators Cynthia Woodbridge (Georgia Gwinnett College) and Mark Mason of Toledo) to develop a ChemFORWARD learning module for Beyond Benign's Green Chemistry Teaching and Learning Community (GCTLC). The module consists of 3-lesson units that aims to help instructors teach students how to use the ChemFORWARD platform to obtain hazard information for specific chemicals, and to identify safer chemicals to replace chemicals of concern in research and in product formulations. #GreenChemistry #saferchemisty #nextgenchem

New resource! ⭐️ This learning module is designed to build knowledge of #GreenChemistry and experience with ChemFORWARD’s game-changing online platform and chemical hazard assessment tool, through which users can identify and eliminate chemicals of concern, avoid regrettable substitutions, and design safer products from the outset. Beyond Benign teamed up with ChemFORWARD to develop the module that will help educators teach students how to use the ChemFORWARD platform. This open-access module can help prepare the future workforce by teaching students how to use hazard evaluation tools to understand and address hazards in chemical design. Explore the module on the Green Chemistry Teaching and Learning Community: https://buff.ly/3Slr5Po 👏 Thank you to the team who collaborated to bring this resource to life: Authors Mark Mason (Ph.D.), Cynthia Woodbridge (Ph.D.), Heather McKenney (MPH.), Gabrielle Rigutto (M.S.) and Monica Nyansa (Ph.D.), and reviewers Julian Silverman (Ph.D.) and Sarah Prescott (Ph.D.).

ChemFORWARD is joining an NSF-funded project, led by IBM, to accelerate the identification, replacement, and capture of "Forever Chemicals". The project aims to simplify the identification of PFAS chemicals and materials; speed the discovery of safer PFAS alternatives with the help of generative AI; and recommend methods for capturing PFAS from industrial applications until viable replacements can be found. We are proud to be part of this timely effort and will be expanding our industry collaboratives to help embed the tools developed in this project across industry sectors. Reach out to learn more! https://lnkd.in/eFYmTxnK #sustainablechemistry #safer #pfas

Heather McKenney, MPH, Science & Safer Chemistry Lead, ChemFORWARD, was a contributing author on the March of Dimes Mom and Baby Action Network (M-BAN) Report released yesterday, "Healthy Environment for a Healthy Start: Promoting Environmental Justice for Equitable Birth Outcomes." This report aims to provide a foundation of data connecting reproductive justice and environmental justice concerns in the United States. This report, researched and compiled by March of Dimes and the Mom and Baby Action Network Environmental Justice members, sheds light on the critical intersection of environmental health and maternal and infant health. Its key findings connect inequitable maternal and infant health outcomes with environmental threats such as air pollution, heat, disasters, cosmetic toxicants, and the fossil fuel lifecycle. "Pregnancy is a time in one's life where exposure to chemicals of concern is not limited to the individual, but also impacts the next generation. It is critical that regulators and clinicians prioritize research, risk communication, and decision making that considers particular susceptibilities of pregnant people, including disparate exposure experienced by people of color and other marginalized groups." – Heather McKenney, Science and Safer Chemistry Lead.
