Underserved areas of Pickens County will soon get access to high-speed internet through Upcountry Fiber, a broadband partnership between BLUE RIDGE ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE INC and WCFIBER. The project will extend Upcountry Fiber’s broadband service – which reaches blazing-fast speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second – to approximately 7,700 more Upstate households and businesses by the end of 2025. Central was a proud sponsor of The LIGHT Foundation’s 6th Annual Golf for Good Tournament hosted by the Lynches River Electric Cooperative on June 7 at the White Plains Golf Course in Pageland, SC. Event proceeds support local residents in need and community-based organizations in Lancaster, Kershaw and Chesterfield Counties. The LIGHT Foundation is a volunteer-run registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2017 by Lynches River Electric Cooperative employees. It aims to improve the quality of life for local residents and support groups and organizations already making a positive impact in the community. Introducing the Optiwatt mobile app, an electric vehicle charging management platform and key component of South Carolina Electric Cooperatives' EV Charging Program. This innovative tool allows utilities to control charging, manage electric load and support the grid. This will assist electric cooperatives in keeping energy costs low, maintaining grid reliability and continuing to provide excellent service to members. To participate, members of participating co-ops may simply connect their EV to the Optiwatt mobile app or desktop app and enable the SC Electric Cooperatives EV Charging enrollment. We are excited to announce that Central will sponsor one local South Carolina student this year to join rising high school juniors and seniors at the 2024 Cooperative Youth Summit taking place in Columbia, SC. on June 15-18. South Carolina’s electric cooperatives, as a whole, are sponsoring 51 students and 10 chaperones. The Cooperative Youth Summit provides students the opportunity to enhance their leadership skills, engage in team-building exercises and learn about electric cooperatives and state government. Throughout the week, they will attend guest lectures from elected representatives, including Henry McMaster for Governor, Governor of South Carolina. Students can also participate in a public speaking competition that awards a $1,000 cash prize to each of the winners.
