We design solutions that help people continuously flourish. Living-Centered Design is how we do it.
About us
As an integrated design firm, we do a lot of things. But at our core, we help people continuously flourish. We leverage the heart, passion and intelligence of our more than 1,000 creative thinkers to develop solutions for some of the greatest challenges facing our clients and society. Whether designing for equity in education, accessible healthcare, inclusive communities, new scientific discoveries or the “next big idea” in business, we partner with organizations to help them improve human life. We do this through a design approach we created called Living-Centered Design. Our approach realizes that to create a world where people continuously flourish, we must address the complex interdependencies that exist between people, businesses, communities, society and the environment. As summer days get hotter across the country, it is important that people of all backgrounds have equal access to ways to keep cool. There is clear data that public pool access is a matter of equity and socioeconomics. New aquatics facilities were are designing in partnership with and for the City of Baltimore will help curb that reality as they serve as safe havens for community members to cool off during our hottest days. We are proud to share that s/b, the official publication of the International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS) recently profiled the equitable aquatics ecosystem we have designed for the people of Baltimore. We are excited to share a milestone for the new Heart, Vascular and Stroke Institute at the NCH Baker Downtown Campus in Naples, Florida. The City of Naples approved the final design of the proposed building, the R.M. Schulze Family Cardiovascular and Stroke Critical Care Center, making way for construction to begin next year. Our Luke Johnson, one of the project designers, was there for the final approval meeting and shared the latest design vision and renderings. The five story expansion near NCH's existing hospital will allow for better service integration and addition of state-of-the-art cardiovascular operating rooms and specialized intensive care unit. https://hubs.la/Q02F89cz0

The new student center at Western Michigan University is the campus centerpiece, replacing a midcentury predecessor and drawing inspiration from the region's natural surroundings and landscape. The central atrium, lined with cedarwood and lit above by skylights, is known as the “Cedar Heart,” invoking the forests of Michigan that include plenty of cedar trees. The Cedar Heart is a place for groups to meet, with performance spaces and meeting rooms — flooded with natural light from the roof all the way to the ground floor. Our Tom Hanley and Darren Poon, AIA were interviewed by The Architect's Newspaper about their work on this project: https://lnkd.in/gVv44wge

A huge congratulations to the University of Florida for setting a new precedent for healthy buildings with its new Student Health Care Center -- it is now the first higher education building in the United States to earn International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) Certification at the Platinum level. "It's one thing to have a mission to create spaces for healthier students, it's another to see it through with unwavering commitment. We're proud of the building we've created with UF and Walker Architects, Inc. It creates a new standard that other colleges and universities will follow," said Roland Lemke, client leader for this project. We were honored to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony for Butler Hospital's new short stay unit, which allows patients needing mental health treatment to receive it in a specialized environment rather than waiting in the emergency department. It is designed to accommodate several different patient populations through a flexible pod system so physical space limits don’t affect access to care. The unit was made possible through federal and state funding, and Rhode Island's governor Dan McKee and Senators Sheldon Whitehouse and Jack Reed were also in attendance. Having long been more than just a place to borrow books, public libraries are now valuable resources to rural and urban communities alike. Libraries offer access to technology, shared resources like tools, kits, and appliances, safe gathering spaces and so much more. In turn, we are rethinking the library design to ensure it is a space where individuals feel supported, included and connected to resources, knowledge and each other. Learn more about the strategies we're implementing with St. Louis Public Library, County of Riverside, The New York Public Library, King County Library System and more. https://lnkd.in/gNJGRKhZ

When it comes to maternal health for Black women, the data paints a harrowing picture. Black women are three times more likely to die in pregnancy and postpartum than white women, according to Centers for Disease Control numbers. We are fortune to be working with TAO + LEE Associates and JAMAA BIRTH VILLAGE, a clinic and eventual postpartum care retreat that provides specialized care for Black women, their babies and families. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) recently published an article that shines a light on the American maternal health crisis and emerging projects and resources available to pregnant women and families, including Jamaa. Our Margaret Bailey, MBA and Brian Silva, AIA, NCARB, CLGB explain their thoughts behind building a space that replicates African customs and cultural norms founder Okunsola Amadou envisioned from the very beginning, in the AIA Architect piece: https://lnkd.in/gpQVmhM7

The newly opened West Park Healthcare Centre in Toronto aims to provide specialized rehabilitative care to meet the growing need for acute and long-term rehab services. Recently The Globe and Mail highlighted the experience of an amputee patient who was one of the first to move into the new 316-bed facility. Marsha Spencer, our Toronto office's Business Practice Leader and member of the project team, was interviewed for the piece and highlighted how the building incorporates the surrounding Humber River Valley into the interior design by "bringing the outdoors, indoors."
