“Please stop propagating the myth of the great leader who is supposed to know everything!” So, what does a good #leader look like? At Ashoka, we believe the best leaders provide those around them with the agency to be #changemakers. Ashoka E2 Member and bestselling author James C. Rhee puts it like this: Leaders are not pilots flying an airplane with all the answers. Instead, they are good listeners who “allow the orchestra to play” – indeed, who encourage everyone to be changemakers. ➡️ When younger people in #SouthAfrica migrate from rural areas to cities for employment, they often leave their families in the care of the grandmothers. In the Sub-Saharan region, these elder women are commonly called Gogos; they have significant responsibilities as caretakers but can lack needed societal support. ⚽️ Over 20 years ago, Ashoka Fellow Beka Ntsanwisi noticed that many older women suffered from ailments like hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, and rheumatism. She took action and invited other women to exercise with her, and gradually, this turned into a movement; there are now about 40 #soccer teams featuring Gogos from the Limpopo province. 📖 Through soccer, the Gogos are redefining older age and surpassing expectations, both medically and culturally. Read about the teams and these incredible players on the Ashoka Changemakers #Medium blog, in this latest installment of a series on changemaking female elders: https://lnkd.in/e99QzSpc

If our systems don’t support the outcomes we want, why don’t we change them? Accounting is one of those systems, says Ashoka E2 Member James C. Rhee. Often, accounting standards drive undesirable business outcomes and behavior, which are then justified by “that’s how the system works.” But, as James argues, unlike physics, “accounting is made up” and therefore bendable – at least for internal purposes. So why don’t we? For more insights on how we can build better systems, businesses, and lives, check out James’ recent bestseller: www.redhelicopter.com or watch his full interview with Ashoka’s Njideka U. We have the power to influence new ways of decision-making inside our organizations that prioritize a thriving society and planet. This requires changing the underlying architecture that guides how decisions are made in the first place. Ashoka Changemaker Companies has partnered up with Unblock, an organizational change consultancy, to explore embedding sustainability and societal impact into core business. Together, we explore three areas of an organization's underlying decision-making architecture that can be "hacked" to guide decisions at scale: - organizational strategy: identify trade-offs to set priorities - measurements: embed non-financial metrics - governance: include underrepresented voices at the table (yes, that includes social entrepreneurs!) A world where everyone feels powerful to contribute to positive impact requires optimizing our organizations. We can't tackle new, complex problems with old ways of working! When, on 15 March 2020, 1,800 New York City schools went into lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, 1.1 million students were expected to stay at home. Within days, the city’s Department of Education procured 321,000 iPads for children without the means for digital learning at home. Then, within a very short time, parents and teachers at all schools agreed to trust each other about who was going to be present at school and when. Cities should always be at the forefront of true participation, where all are capable of contributing to solving the challenges around them. Read Sascha Haselmayer’s* full article in The CEO Magazine Global, and join us at the #ChangemakerSummit for more deep dive on #trueparticipation. *Ashoka Fellow, founder of City Mart, and partner at Ashoka Germany. https://lnkd.in/dsAMkp5T

Launching, leading and growing a social venture can be challenging, and navigating legal complexities is often a hurdle facing innovators and social entrepreneurs. Some of the most common questions we see our #AshokaFellows asking include, How do I form a new legal entity in a new country? What are the legal implications of some of the most common financing mechanisms? Ongoing, we'll be sharing legal resources for our Ashoka Fellows and social entrepreneurs through our pro-bono partnership with the Association of Pro Bono Counsel - APBCo. If you're navigating the legal complexities of your social venture, stay tuned.
