  • We are thrilled to announce the launch of the film "Discover Oltenia", a cinematic journey into the wonders of the Oltenia de sub Munte Bioregion in Romania✨ "Discover Oltenia" is the only film in Romania created by renowned filmmaker Charlie Ottley that's financially supported exclusively by an NGO, Asociația Kogayon. They are BWL's partner in Romania, an NGO supported by BRD - Groupe Societe Generale as a strategic partner. The film aims to promote the Oltenia de sub Munte, an aspiring UNESCO Geopark, showcasing the region's most treasured assets: nature reserves, geological sites, caves, gorges, virgin forests, diverse flora and fauna, cultural monuments, traditions, local communities, and eco-tourism activities 🏞️ The 17-minute film captures breathtaking moments, offering viewers a glimpse into the heart of this region 💗 The film had two notable release events: • An open-air preview in the Geopark with free entrance, allowing the local community to connect with their heritage 🍿 • A grand premiere in Bucharest by invitation, featuring a full house and esteemed speakers, including Madlen Serban, UNESCO Secretary General, Flavia Popa, Secretary General of BRD, and Alexandru Andrasanu, an UNESCO expert in Global Geoparks. 🥂 Recognizing the importance of community involvement, a social media contest was organized, giving community members the opportunity to name the film. The overwhelming response and creative suggestions led to the selection of a name that truly captures the film's essence – Discover Oltenia. Towards making many more films that showcase the beauty of our bioregions and its communities! 🌍 If the trailer sparked your curiosity, feel free to watch the full 17-minute movie in the first link below 🐻 #BioregionalWeavingLabs #BWL #Geopark #Oltenia #weaving --- Bioregional Weaving Labs Collective – mobilising 1 million changemakers to overcome systemic barriers to restore, protect and regenerate 1 million ha of Europe’s land and sea 2030.

  • Today we welcome the publication of a comprehensive compilation of different emerging ideas about how we might reimagine existing financial mechanisms to meet the demands of the regenerative transition we so desperately need. This e-book 🌎 🌿 'Bioregional Financing Facilities (BFFs) - Reimagining Finance to Regenerate Our Planet' helps us to imagine real alternatives to existing financial systems that are not delivering the decentralization of governance and value flows required to make contextual and culturally sensitive change. We are happy to have contributed to this book by sharing the principles and learnings we have gained from establishing our European network of Bioregional Weaving Labs (BWLs), and in particular the case study of BWL South East Ireland. It's heartwarming to see so much of our multistakeholder approach, ground-up methodologies, support platforms and portfolios of innovations, and Commonland's #4Return framework, included in the recommendations around the enabling conditions needed for BFFs. We look forward to continue learning and including insights from the other contributions to the e-book regarding how we could and should finance integrated, holistic landscape restoration, nature conservation and regeneration in bioregions. One opportunity will be a pilot that we are launching, building on the bioregional support platform and emerging concepts included in the 'Innovating Landscape and Community Finance' work being undertaken by BWL South East Ireland, supported by a.o. Robert Bosch Stiftung and alv foundation. Here's to ground-up, regenerative bioregional financing happening – together! You can download the full version of the book for free here: https://lnkd.in/gvqV_JGQ Congratulations to BWL Backbone Team member Leon Seefeld who co-led the writing of this book, together with Samantha Power of The The BioFi Project (as part of the Buckminster Fuller Institute) and Dark Matter Labs. Thanks to Sarah Prosser and Karin Müller for the contributions about Bioregional Weaving Labs in Ireland and the approaches we use in BWL Europe. #BWL #BioregionalFinanceFacilities #financingsystemschange #BWLSEIreland

    Weaver (of social-ecological change)

Here is a wee gem of a film (1min 35secs) called 'Multi Species Sward' that we made a couple of weeks ago, using sand art to celebrate the diversity and beauty of nature and all those that farm in harmony with it. Hope you get as much joy from it as I did being slightly involved in it. Big thanks to Sean and Miranda Corcoran for the rest of the amazing creation at the beautiful Kilmurrin Cove. The final piece was 150m long and only there for a few hours until the power of the sea returned to wash it away without a trace. No art or film with the title 'Multi Species Sward' would have been made without some special farmers' daily dedication to finding nature-friendly ways of working with the soil and animals they care for. Thanks everyone we have worked with who therefore co-created this art and the film: John, Bridget, John, Grace, Donal, Sinead, Therese, Alan, Mike, Paul, Ned, Stuart, James, Clodagh, Shane, Willie, Ali... and many others! We're also celebrating the fact that we have at at last constituted our own independent entity for supporting this bioregional work in Ireland: the Bioregional Weaving Alliance Ireland. We will have a bigger launch of that early Sept when our website is ready and communications clear, but hooray to the fact we are now set up for all sorts of collective impact partnerships. Background information on the film: This film was commissioned by Bioregional Weaving Lab Ireland from artists Sean Corcoran and Miranda Corcoran of The Art Hand on location at Kilmurrin Cove in the Copper Coast Geopark, SE Ireland. The music is a track called 'Coumshingaun' courtesy of Micko Roche-Music. The film - Multi Species Sward - is inspired by farmers and others working with nature in the South East of Ireland. This specific project is connected to thoughts harvested by BWL around how a landscape perspective can contribute to the future of a sustainable agri-food sector in Ireland through the Deep Demonstration initiative by DAFM/Climate KIC. Join our movement for regenerative, place-based changemakers in SE Ireland. More information: - In Ireland: https://lnkd.in/eiQiwzYQ... - In Europe: https://lnkd.in/ecw6vU2g... - Through Commonland: https://commonland.com/ Next events in Ireland (save the dates): - June 27th (tbc), 2-5pm - 'Keep weaving' in person event for all local changemakers and stakeholders involved in BWL. - September 2nd, 2-5pm - 'From the bioregion now to the bioregion of the future'. An event to launch our new entity. Bioregional Weaving Labs Collective Commonland #deepdemonstration Climate-KIC

  • 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 – A catalyst or obstacle for social entrepreneurs to access financial capital when working on nature-based solutions? 📊🌱 To secure funding, social entrepreneurs navigate a diverse landscape of financial sources, each driven by distinct institutional logics, with an abundance of terminologies and a lack of standardized impact measurement. This complexity results in competing demands for impact measurement, which increases the challenge of securing financial capital. In collaboration with the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University, researcher Johanna Gärtner explored the role of impact measurement in nature-based solutions by social entrepreneurs and its influence on accessing financial capital. The study identified three distinct pathways to access financial capital with varying degrees of institutional complexity: 𝟭. 𝗟𝗼𝘄 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘁𝘆: Financial institutions prioritize personal relationships and shared values over formal impact reports when providing philanthropic grants. Decisions are based on trust and inspiration, with face-to-face interactions and storytelling playing a significant role. 𝟮. 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘁𝘆: This pathway involves a collaborative approach between impact investors and social entrepreneurs. They work together to develop flexible impact measurement frameworks, balancing financial and emotional connections in decision-making to navigate institutional barriers. 𝟯. 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘁𝘆: Social entrepreneurs and public funders aim to support nature-based solutions but differ in their motivations. Public funding decisions are made strictly based on written evidence, without the influence of social capital, leading to a lack of collaboration and a significant information gap between policymakers and entrepreneurs. Furthermore, the research emphasizes that the Bioregional Weaving Labs Collective could act as an: 1) Educator 🎓 to share relevant impact measurement tools, best practices derived from the experiences of other social entrepreneurs to enable social enterprises to navigate complexities effectively. 2) Connector 🔗 to foster stronger collaborations within the ecosystem and matchmake suitable investors or funders with aligned social entrepreneurs’ impact objectives, financial needs, and stage of social ventures. 3) Lobbyist 📢 to advocate for more realistic and effective impact measurement frameworks and act as a channel between policymakers, industry experts, and social entrepreneurs, translating academic knowledge into practical and actionable guidance. Are you a social entrepreneur working on nature-based solutions? What are your experiences and best practices for measuring your impact? We’d love to know! ☁️ #bioregionalweavinglabs #BWL #systemsfinance #regenerativefinance #NatureBasedSolutions

  • In the coming 6 weeks we’ll highlight 6 Master theses by 6 incredible students from the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University on financing nature-based entrepreneurs. The joint research project was a response to the question what role Bioregional Weaving Labs can play in the field of regenerative financing. In this post we highlight the thesis by Daniel Günther, who investigated: “How can institutional logics explain the lack of funding and investment in nature-based solutions?” Daniel delved into the institutional logics governing financial institutions and nature-based enterprises, shedding light on the massive investment gap within the nature-based solutions sector. Three distinct institutional logics emerged that shape organizational behaviour when it comes to the funding of and investment in nature-based solutions: 1. Ecologic logic – its main objective is the preservation and integrity of the Earth’s biosphere and its ecosystems out of a deep and intrinsic appreciation of nature; 2. Impact logic – its main objective being a positive societal or environmental impact with the underlying belief that everyone can make a difference (i.e. create impact); 3. Financial logic – its main objective is to maximize financial returns while minimising risk, putting its trust in markets. Some of the financial organisations - many of which were impact investors - still primarily displayed either a financial or an impact logic. Whereas most Nature-based Enterprises in need of finance displayed ecological logic as their most central logic. Organizations that were less deeply immersed in their own principal institutional logic had an easier time engaging with other organizations, as they connected easier when funders and other financiers displayed rather a financial or an impact logic, over an ecologic one. This allowed them to explore more thoroughly where exactly they were matching with each other, where there was conflict, and where there was potential to complement each other. This thesis showcases the importance of deep listening, curiosity and the willingness to learn and unlearn together. Bridging the finance gap requires to let go of our prejudices and fixed mindsets – allowing enough space for an open mind, heart and will to weave collaborations among organisations with different institutional logics. This is what we’re also trying to embody with the BWL Collective, a collective with a diversity of organisations with different institutional logics. This is also why we love working with the 4 Returns framework from our partner Commonland, as it helps build linguistic bridges between organisations with different logics, to work together on social, natural, financial and inspirational returns. How might we bridge the massive investment gap within the nature-based solutions sector? #bioregionalweavinglabs #BWL #systemsfinance #regenerativefinance #NatureBasedSolutions
