If our systems don’t support the outcomes we want, why don’t we change them? Accounting is one of those systems, says Ashoka E2 Member James C. Rhee. Often, accounting standards drive undesirable business outcomes and behavior, which are then justified by “that’s how the system works.” But, as James argues, unlike physics, “accounting is made up” and therefore bendable – at least for internal purposes. So why don’t we? For more insights on how we can build better systems, businesses, and lives, check out James’ recent bestseller: www.redhelicopter.com or watch his full interview with Ashoka’s Njideka U. James C. Rhee thanks for these insightful words and for your engagement with Ashoka. Couldn't agree more that we need more integrated measurements and new accounting frameworks. Valuation metrics is one of the major areas of an organization that guides decisions, often maximizing profit over social good. Ashoka's Changemaker Companies team has been thinking about decision-making architecture, including the role of measurements.
