There were parts that I enjoyed- the heart warming parts about supporting her friends, funny bits about texting from a friends phone, and her breakthrough in her mid-late 20s - but most was about the crazy escapades of a sex crazed young woman who partied very hard. The stories cover her teens through turning 30 and I am well beyond that, lol. I think younger people would enjoy this more than me. I give this 2.5 out of 5....more

This is the first Elin Hilderbrand book I have read, and initially, I wasn’t sure what to think. It seemed to go very slow, had a large cast of characters and took quite awhile to set the stage. By the end though, I thoroughly enjoyed it! The two things that I am sure were to be plot twists at the end I had figured out, but honestly, it didn’t spoil it. The story wrapped up very well, all the lose ends tied neatly and left me smiling. I will certainly try another of this author’s books!...more

Somethings I had not considered before, and others were refreshers of things I have read or heard elsewhere. The author does not offer financial advice. In chapter 20, he shared some of his own financial decisions and in at least one area (quickly trying to pay off a mortgage), he provided me with some peace of mind. Worth the read if you are wanting to better understand your own decision making. ...more

I am absolutely flabbergasted by how resilient, resourceful, courageous these men were! Shackleton’s leadership and decision making was impressive! The fact that all 28 men survived living on ice floes in the Wedell Sea, managing to sail and camp on a remote island, and for 5 to head cross the Drake Passage to South Georgia Island in a lifeboat is so incredible! In all, a 2 year ordeal from the time the Endurance left South Georgia Island in 1914 for Antarctica! Fascinating!! ...more

This book is different than the other books by Adam Shoalts I have read so far, as it is less about adventure, and more about unravelling the history of a legend in the remote wilderness of Labrador. There is adventure, but it takes a backseat in this one. It was also somewhat repetitive, rereading some of the historical accounts of the legend as he reasoned through possible explanations. Because of that, my imagination was not captured in the same way that I have come to expect from his previous books....more

This book is a collection of essays on a variety of things - Canada Goose, The Plague, Hailey’s Comet, and Diet Dr. Pepper are just a few. I was expecting this book to be funny, not sure why, but it wasn’t. I was a bit disappointed in that, however, it was fascinating to get a glimpse into the author’s mind and he wove facts, stories, and his personal thoughts on the items he chose. Despite not being funny overall, it did keep my attention and sparked my curiosity to look up some of the things he talked about, like the largest ball of paint. ...more

I met her briefly afterward so she could sign my copy of her book. My peers and I then had a private coaching session with her. Each encounter was inspiring. I listened to this on my way to and from work but will also be reading her book and working through the reflections to help cement her wisdom in my mind for practice. Haesun uses stories to illustrate the power of words and encourages you, as the listener, to get curious about your conversation partner and ask questions that help them see their strengths and their progress so far. I am aware that this is one side of the story, but also aware that this is his truth. I think anyone growing up like he did, in the lime light, would have a hard time - especially with the nature of the British tabloids, their near constant stories of the Monarchy, with seemingly no thought to the impact of their stories. Then add to that what he shared about the workings inside the Royal Family, and it is unreal! I was surprised by some the stories he tells that do not paint him in a positive light, but I appreciated hearing them. It is not often, in my limited experience, that you hear such things directly from a Royal, and I found it fascinating! The only thing that knocked it from a 5 star review for me is that seed of doubt I have from not hearing other sides of the story. ...more

While much of what was discussed related to business and leadership, the infinite game mindset discussed applies to life in general. Simon contrasts the infinite mindset required to live life and perpetuate business (there are no “winners” at life and business, just cause driven) to the finite mindset (focused on immediate, shorter term time frame, often focusing on numbers) that can often lead to the demise of business. There are many great examples of the impact of both throughout this book and discusses the courage it takes to lead despite the pressures toward the finite. Well worth the listen!...more

When she was telling us about it, she was laughing so hard I had to try it! I was very disappointed. I listened to this on Audible and told the ladies that the narrator was talking too slow. On their advice, I sped it up, but it didn’t help. The narrator did a great job performing this (she gave each person a different voice!) but the story was full of ridiculous goings on that I just did not find funny or even remotely believable. The ending tried to wrap things up very quickly and it fell flat. I would give it maybe a 2.5 at most for story, but the extra half star is due to the voices....more

Many of the stories reminded me stories I hear on Thursday nights at my Dad’s. And hearing it read by Matthew himself, with all his voices, made it that much more enjoyable. Other stories were more somber. I was surprised in some parts by the candor. I am not typically someone who enjoys a memoir, but hearing it read by the author was a plus. I would actually rate this a 3.5. Some of it felt disjointed - lots of “Note to Self”, “Bumper Sticker” and “Prescribe” bits to interject. On the whole, I liked it....more

So I listened to a podcast episode where scientists reviewed his book. They mentioned that Suzanne Simard was the expert on trees and questioned whether or not she knew the contents of Wohlleben’s book before writing the epilogue for it. I then talked with a friend who is a forester and he recommended I read this book before Wohlleben’s as it better explains the science. So, I picked it up as an audio book to listen to on my commute. Fascinating doesn’t even begin to describe the complexity of forest interactions that is laid out in this book! Dr. Simard starts at the beginning of her experience and weaves her personal life throughout the retelling of her forest experience, history and research - a memoir filled with forest research. Thanks to her work, some forestry practices are changing and the influence on future foresters. If you are fascinated about the complexity of the natural world, are concerned about the impact of human activity, or just love trees, you should give it a read!...more
