The Chase host Bradley Walsh was compelled to intervene as the beloved quiz show made its anticipated return to the afternoon TV line-up.

Bradley greeted a fresh group of contestants eager to snag a hefty cash prize and outsmart The Chaser. Hopefuls, Jo, Liz, Sheryl, and Jack, faced off against Paul Sinha, known as The Sinnerman, in the latest instalment aired on Tuesday.

However, when Jack stepped up for his challenge, the atmosphere took an awkward turn. Presented with a tempting offer of £40,000, he instead chose the safer route with a lower bid of £8,000, explaining to Bradley: "I'm a bit of a square, so I'll go for the £8,000."

A puzzled Bradley, famed for his stint on Coronation Street, queried: "Did you say you're a bit of a square? What's that got to do with it?"

Jack elaborated: "I'm a square, just a bit of a loser."

This prompted a swift interruption from Bradley who firmly stated: "No you're not at all! That's got to stop immediately Jack!" This boost of confidence seemed to pay off as Jack defied the odds, securing the £8,000 and advancing to the final showdown, reports the Mirror.

In a thrilling conclusion, all four team members reached the final and collectively answered 20 questions correctly, eyeing a shared pot of £25,000. However, The Sinnerman proved too formidable, and despite viewers hailing the episode as "an all-round top edition of The Chase", the team fell short of victory against The Chaser.

Last week's repeat episode of The Chase had fans up in arms when a contestant shockingly disregarded his teammate's input at a pivotal moment, repeating an incorrect answer previously given by The Chaser.

One incensed viewer posted a video clip on X (formerly Twitter), exclaiming: "You have to see this to believe it."

Others confessed to replaying the scene multiple times, still unable to fathom the blunder.

The tension was palpable as Bradley Walsh quizzed Chaser Jenny Ryan with "Which confectionary company makes Revels?" After hesitating, she incorrectly guessed "Cadbury" However, the real drama unfolded with the contestants' response.

Bradley announced, "Stop the clock, that is wrong", and posed the question again to the two remaining players, a man and a woman. The woman tentatively suggested "I can't think of another...Mars?", but her male counterpart, apparently oblivious to The Chaser's previous guess, whispered, "Cadbury".

Despite the woman's reminder, "She said Cadbury," the man confidently told Walsh, "Cadbury," leaving his partner bewildered. A stunned Walsh gestured towards Jenny and reiterated, "She said Cadbury", while the camera switched to The Chaser's reaction.

It was then confirmed that Mars was the correct answer.
