Caleb Williams appears to have had a change of heart regarding the Chicago Bears, saying Thursday he would be 'excited' to be drafted by the team currently holding the No 1 overall pick.

Williams' new remarks come less than two months before the start of the NFL Draft, where the former Heisman Trophy winner will likely be selected first overall.

In December, Williams liked an Instagram post saying the Bears should not draft him and select Marvin Harrison Jr. with the top pick.

Williams' pivot comes alongside current Chicago starting quarterback Justin Fields' future being in doubt for months.

And on Wednesday, a video of Fields jumping up and down about a possible trade to his hometown Atlanta Falcons was posted by his agent, Mario Nunez, on Instagram.

'If I get drafted by the Bears, I'll be excited,' Williams said to ESPN. 'If they trade the pick, and I get drafted by someone else, I'm just as excited.

'Speaking about Chicago, they have a talented team, a talented offense and defense. For anyone to be in that situation, I think they'd be excited,' Williams continued.

Williams had heard the noise about trying to land in the Windy City, as the Bears have not won a playoff game since 2010.

'I'm not pushing any agenda,' Williams said. 'At the end of the day, the Bears have the last say. Regardless of how I feel, I'm not pushing an agenda of, "Yeah, I want to go. Or no, I don't want to go." I'm excited for whatever comes.'

Chicago will likely have to make a decision on Fields before March 13, when the NFL's free agent signing period begins and the team would have to budget for retaining its quarterback, or allocate money for Williams.

The Bears have yet to win more than seven games in one season with Fields directing the offense, although Chicago's overall roster has not given the former Ohio State standout too much help over the last three years.

Moving on from Fields would reset Chicago's quarterback timeline and give the rebuilding franchise more of a safety net to build an elite roster around its signal caller.

The Bears biggest draft needs do not include a quarterback. Not pulling the trigger on drafting Williams could prove to be prolonging the inevitable if Fields cannot lead the team to playoff success.

Several teams would be happy to acquire Williams' services, including the Washington Commanders, who have the No 2 overall pick.
