Medicaid Expansion and Health Care Access

Everyone deserves access to life-saving medical care.

From hurricane disasters to the Covid-19 pandemic, we’ve seen proof that Floridians care for each other. By joining together, Black, white, and brown, we can reform our healthcare system so we can all stay healthy and our communities can thrive.

This page contains important information for anyone who either needs health insurance or wants to learn how to advocate for better healthcare policies.

Expand Medicaid

1.4 million Floridians could get access to affordable care — and the federal funding is already there to make it happen.

We can get Medicaid expansion on the 2026 ballot. We just need you.

To make it on the ballot we need to collect more than 1 million petition signatures from registered voters in Florida.

You can do your part to fix Florida’s broken healthcare system by signing the petition yourself and encouraging your friends, family, and other members of your community to do the same.

  • All petitions must be filled out by voters who are registered in the State of Florida.
  • Best practice is to fill out petitions in blue or black ink.
  • All petitions should be checked to ensure that all information is filled out, and that the information is legible.
  • Ripped, damaged, or illegible petitions are not accepted by the Supervisor of Election.
  • All petitions should be submitted to Florida Decides Healthcare or your local hub within a week so that they can be reviewed for quality control. When you are done collecting petitions, please sort into counties, and return the signed forms to your local hub.

Please mail completed petitions to:

We can help you determine which health coverage you qualify for, and what the cost would be. You may be eligible for subsidies, or tax credits, that lower the monthly cost of health insurance!

Health coverage through the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare) is more affordable and accessible than ever before. This year, 4 out of 5 people will be able to find a plan on the Marketplace for $10 or less per month.

  • Open Enrollment Period (November 1, 2024 – January 15, 2025): Don’t miss out on the chance to get the coverage you need! Our Health Coaches will explain your options and help you enroll in the right plan for you.
  • Special Enrollment Period (All year): After a life-changing event, you have up to 60 days to enroll in a new plan through the federal Marketplace (Obamacare). You could qualify for a plan if you move, lose your insurance coverage, get married or divorced, have a baby, or have a significant change in income. Learn more at healthcare.gov
  • Any time of the year: We can help you enroll in Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). If you don’t qualify, we can still help you find affordable, quality health care.

Medicaid rules changed in 2023, following the end of the Covid-19 pandemic Public Health Emergency.

If you or your child lost Medicaid coverage, Catalyst Miami’s health coaches may be able to help you re-apply. Our Health Coaches may also help you find other insurance or affordable, quality care.

Protecting your family’s health care will not endanger your immigration status or ability to legalize (click here to read about the public charge).

Here are some actions you can take:

  1. Make sure Florida’s Department of Children and Families (DCF) knows how to reach you with your current contact information — mailing address, cell/text phone, and email.
  2. Click here to create an online ACCESS account. If you already have one, click here to log in and make sure your information is updated. Check your renewal date.
  3. Complete your annual renewals (or redeterminations) when notified by DCF.
  4. Report changes in household members and income to DCF.
  5. Keep copies of DCF notices.
  6. Watch your mail. If you get anything from DCF or your health insurance program, open it right away and respond. If you need help figuring out what to do, contact a trusted community agency like Catalyst Miami or Covering Florida

If you no longer qualify for Medicaid or CHIP, you may be able to enroll in a low- or no-cost health plan through the federal Marketplace (Obamacare). Financial assistance may be available to you. At no cost, our Health Coaches can help you explore your options and enroll in a plan. Click here to schedule an appointment with us today.
