A French startup that helps construction projects cut their carbon emissions has secured an additional $4.9 million in funding, bringing its total Series A funding to around $9.7 million.

Vizcab, which launched in 2015, has developed a software platform that calculates the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of construction projects to reduce their carbon impact. It measures how environmentally efficient each stage of a given project is, and how much CO2 the project may emit.

Vizcab's AI-driven platform automates the LCA calculations by integrating with construction companies' software platforms and connecting stakeholders, including architects, manufacturers, engineers, and construction companies. This enables them to analyze the construction project's carbon footprint.

A bevy of climate tech startups have started incorporating AI into their products, using it to monitor energy grids and automatically adjust household energy use, for example.

Regulation such as the European Union's Energy Performance of Buildings Directive — which aims to cut down on energy use in buildings — has also catalyzed demand for Vizcab's platform, said cofounder and CEO Thomas Jusselme.

"With the new regulatory environment, we are seeing a rising interest for automated LCAs, and the demand for our products is growing exponentially," he said.

The Series A was led by early-stage venture capital firm Kompas VC, with additional participation from Global Brain and Brick and Mortar Ventures. It brings the startup's total funding to around $11.5 million.

With the cash injection, Vizcab will focus on its international expansion into new EU markets, while doubling down on its presence in France, Jusselme said.
