Working a job while studying in college can be challenging; however, it can also help students learn a variety of skills and expose them to different work environments. Students should take the opportunity to work while in college, not only for financial reasons but also to learn more about their interests.

To recuperate the money spent on textbooks, many students resell their books after they’re done with them. The JMU Bookstore buys back books from students under very specific circumstances and will only pay up to half of the initial cost. To help alleviate the cost of textbooks, the bookstore should have more buyback options.

Many students declare their major before their first semester, though they aren't required to do so until the third Friday of their third semester. For students who aren’t sure what they want to study in college, JMU offers an exploratory major that allows students to experience a variety of courses. More students should take advantage of the exploratory major or put off deciding their major until their second year.

Loper Bright Enterprises v. Rainmondo is an upcoming Supreme Court case that concerns the funding of monitors on fishing boats but has far-reaching consequences for government regulation. If the Supreme Court were to rule to overturn the Chevron deference, a precedent established in a 1984 case, many industries, such as those involving food and drugs, could experience deregulation.

On Oct. 5, the WNBA commissioner announced the Golden State Warriors would be adding a women's team by 2025. Further plans to expand the league in the coming years have also been suggested. Though the growth of the WNBA is beneficial to women's basketball, the league should focus on meeting the needs of current players before expanding.

Brita filters, and water filters in general, are a highly recommended item for students to bring to college. Considering tap water can contain a variety of contaminants, filtering water can help improve students’ health while reducing waste from using plastic water bottles.

With the closing of Carrier Library for renovations, many students have had to find alternative study spaces. Before the renovations, Carrier and Rose libraries were the only locations on campus with dedicated quiet study areas. JMU should create new quiet study spaces on Main Campus to accommodate students who prefer to study in silence.

Though JMU was able to compete in a bowl game on a technicality, it was not able to compete in the Sun Belt Conference Championship. The NCAA's rule preventing teams transitioning into the Football Bowl Subdivision from playing in the postseason hinders developing football programs.

For some people, relaxing activities aren't always the best way to relieve stress. To allow students to let out their frustrations, UREC should have a rage room where students can break objects or just scream.

At JMU, students pursuing a minor in pre-medicine don't have to take a course in human anatomy as many medical schools don't require this of prospective students. In spite of this, JMU should require a human anatomy course anyways to better prepare future physicians for medical school and beyond.

Many STEM professors rely on textbooks to teach the content of their courses. Learning from textbooks can be difficult and even intimidating for some students. STEM professors should incorporate nonfiction books other than textbooks, such as biographies, into their curriculums to help keep students interested.

Tracking services such as Life360 and other tracking products like AirTags and Tiles are popular among college students. Although they can help friends keep track of each other, students should avoid using them to protect themselves from people who could be using this information to harm them.

The wildfires in Canada over the summer, and more recently the wildfires on the Hawaiian island of Maui, demonstrate the negatives effects of climate change considering drought was a potential factor in both cases. This illustrates that the need for people in power to address the climate crisis is more pressing than ever.

The "Barbie" movie was highly anticipated and is on track to be the highest earning domestic film of 2023. Its feminist message has been received positively by many but has also been the subject of criticism. Though largely satirical, its representation of gender dynamics in modern society may be misleading.

The Titan submersible disaster, which occurred on June 18, resulted in the deaths of its four wealthy passengers and OceanGate's CEO. This event occurred largely overshadowed the sinking of a ship filled with over 700 immigrants, the majority of which likely drowned, in the Mediterranean the week before. The media coverage of these two disasters has revealed the media's bias of covering events that involve the wealthy.

Gun violence has begun to seem increasingly common in Harrisonburg and surrounding communities with the recent shooting at a party at the Redpoint apartment complex in Rockingham County. To minimize violence, guns should never be brought to parties, especially when alcohol is involved.

As the weather warms students have begun to swarm outdoor spaces at JMU including the Quad. When outside, students should be mindful of taking care of their skin and use sunscreen to not only prevent burns, but skin cancer as well.

Students learn a lot about JMU in their first year, from "Dukes hold doors" to the smell of Harrisonburg after it rains. To make the most of their time at JMU, students should participate in FROG week, clubs and other activities.
