Thanks to decades of polio vaccination as part of the routine childhood immunization schedule, most people in the U.S. are protected against polio. However, poliovirus still circulates in parts of the world. Clinicians in the U.S. should offer adult patients who are known or suspected to be unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated a primary vaccination series with inactivated polio vaccine.
