#TheAHALife X Centennial: Meet Betsy Vetter, our National Senior Director, Grassroots, Field Advocacy, who has been an instrumental part of #TheAHALife for the last 21 years! As we swiftly approach our 100th birthday, Betsy is "excited to be a witness to the growth of the American Heart Association into a global leader for longer, healthier lives." Read more about Betsy's experience below. What has motivated you to stay for 20+ years with the organization? - The top reason I stay is the work we do saves lives. In 2013, our advocacy led to legislation requiring pulse oximetry screening for all newborns. The following year, a news article quoted a mom thanking the legislature for the law. She said, without it her baby would have died. I have been blessed to watch that baby grow and thrive. That brings me to another key reason I stay — the incredible people we work with, including our colleagues, partners and most importantly our volunteers. It is awe-inspiring to get to know so many people dedicated to building healthier lives. Every single day we get to learn something new. How fabulous is that? As we celebrate this milestone, what excites you about the future of the organization and #TheAHALife? - I am so proud to be here for this important milestone. When I look to the future, I am excited to witness the growth of the American Heart Association into a global leader for longer, healthier lives. It’s exciting to know that what you dream about today could be a reality tomorrow. The American Heart Association is an organization that says, we can make it so. We are bringing such amazing innovations to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease and stroke. It is an honor to engage and empower our volunteers to help bring about change that will realize our mission. Nothing compares to getting to know them, seeing how the work we do impacts them individually, and then witnessing how it transforms our world.
