Living in substandard housing conditions can result in serious health issues. In California, renters are 2.6 times more likely to have mold and 2.5 times more likely to have cockroaches than homeowners. Communities of color are also more likely to be renters: throughout the state, 62.9% of African Americans and 55.5% of Latinxs rent their homes, compared to just 44.7% of white people—demonstrating a clear connection between the disproportionate exposure to unhealthy housing conditions and many of the health inequities experienced by low-income communities and communities of color. In 2023, PHI’s Regional Asthma Management & Prevention (RAMP) worked with tenants’ rights groups, community advocates and elected officials to pass AB 548, making it easier to discover and correct severe health and safety problems in multi-unit housing. Thanks to their efforts, California's 6.8 million renters living in multi-unit rental housing now have better protections from substandard housing and health threats like mold, cold and pests: #Housing #Health #SocialDeterminants #SDoH #TenantsRights #HealthyHousing #Asthma #Mold #HealthEquity #PublicHealth

Several large-scale, human-driven changes to the planet — including climate change, the loss of biodiversity and the spread of invasive species — are making infectious diseases more dangerous to people, animals and plants, according to a new study. Scientists have documented these effects before in more targeted studies that have focused on specific diseases and ecosystems. But the new research, a meta-analysis of nearly 1,000 previous studies, suggests that these patterns are relatively consistent around the globe and across the tree of life: #ClimateChange #PublicHealth #ClimateChangesHealth #HealthEquity #GlobalHealth

Climate change is extending California’s wildfire season, which has grown in length and severity over the past several years--and as a result, millions of residents experience increased exposure to harmful pollutants and poor air quality. In 2023, PHI’s Regional Asthma Management & Prevention (RAMP) and partners piloted a new program to provide free, certified indoor air cleaners and asthma education to Bay Area community members most susceptible to the impacts of wildfire smoke. In addition to providing 1,000 Bay Area homes with free air cleaners and asthma education, the pilot program serves as a helpful framework for how cross-sector partnerships can help replicate, scale, and bring similar success to other communities nationwide.
