5 reasons GDP growth isn't fit for purpose as our primary economic goal. 👩🎓 This #EarthOvershootDay let's focus on the root cause of many of our environmental and social crises - our fixation with GDP growth at all costs. Today is the date when humanity’s demand on nature exceeds what the earth can regenerate in a year. And this is just one of the reasons it's time to go #BeyondGrowth Economic growth usually refers to growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which is simply a crude measure of some of the goods and services we produce. A growing GDP has become synonymous with economic progress, but it's an extremely limited metric. ⚠ GDP is a crude metric of the goods and services we produce and it only captures some types of economic activity. For example, harmful economic activities like an oil spill can be good for GDP but something so vital as unpaid care isn't included. ⚠ GDP is subject to diminishing marginal returns. So while many low income countries in the majority world would benefit from growth, rich countries have largely grown past the point of utility. For example, the USA's high GDP doesn't equate to high life expectancy or health outcomes. ⚠ GDP growth is strongly correlated with climate emissions. While some decoupling is happening very recently, no one has convincingly mapped out how we could sufficiently reduce global climate emissions while rich countries continue to pursue endless growth. ⚠ GDP was calculated to quickly compare the size of different economies. It doesn't tell us how many people have a living income or a safe secure home and it can't tell us anything about the state of our environment. Today several more meaningful ways of measuring economic progress have been developed.
