I had a wonderful day of teaching at the Harris Garrard Academy Summer School with The Brilliant Club today! The Brilliant Club is a university access charity that recruits PhD students and Early Career Researchers to support less advantaged school pupils to access the most competitive universities and succeed when they get there. The course I have designed focuses on Menstruation Taboo and Health Promotion, engaging KS4 students in university-style tutorials and offering a solid grounding in practical Medical and Social Sciences. #InspiringInclusion

"Place matters even in the digital age. Those of us who have grown up in places described by others as ‘left behind’ can feel in our bones that community shapes our opportunities and aspirations." Read our CEO Anne-Marie Canning's contribution to UPP's essay collection in honour of Bob Kerslake. Reflecting on her experiences in Doncaster, Bradford, and her work with parents across the UK, Anne-Marie emphasises the need for cross-sector collaborative efforts to tackle regional disparities. 📰 https://lnkd.in/dNRXJxMe

We are pleased to announce that two of The Brilliant Club's former tutors have been elected to parliament. Congratulations to Dr. Jeevun Sandher, the new MP for Loughborough, and Dr Sam Rushworth, now sitting as the MP for Bishop Auckland. Jeevun and Sam both tutored less advantaged students in schools as part of our Scholars Programme, which raises attainment and improves university access. We are excited to see how their experience on the programme might shape their approach to educational inequality in their local areas and beyond. It is wonderful to see our Scholars Programme tutors proceed to such influential roles in British politics. Congratulations both, and we look forward to working with you over the next five years to ensure all students are afforded the same opportunities, regardless of their background.

Congratulations The Rt Hon Keir Starmer and The Labour Party on winning the General Election. We look forward to working together to tackle inequality in education and make education fair for every child and young person, regardless of their socioeconomic background. https://lnkd.in/gnXkRMDk    On election night we were delighted to hear Secretary of State for Education, The Rt Hon Bridget Phillipson MP, promise to “tear down the barriers to opportunity which hold back too many of our children”.     Today we’re launching Fair Education in 2024: Priorities for a New Government – providing the new Government with policies that prioritise, above all else, tackling inequality. We also look at fresh ideas already being implemented by some of our coalition of 300 members, and invite the Government to work with us all to develop and implement solutions together.     Please join us in sharing this as widely as possible, as we speak with one unified voice – fair education is achievable! https://lnkd.in/gnXkRMDk #FairEdForAll

It's polling day! A reminder of our education policy asks for the next government as the votes start to roll in. As educational inequality deepens, we ask the elected government to put measures in place to ensure a young person's future is not determined by their background

In the final few days before the General Election, we are sharing our parents and carers' priorities in educational policy. Our Parent Power chapters have been working hard to break down barriers to educational equality in their local areas. Read our blog to learn about what they have been working on, and what they need from the next government. https://bit.ly/3VPRNjQ

We’re pleased to share that for another year, data from the Higher Education Access Tracker (HEAT) and UCAS shows that students who participate in The Scholars Programme are more likely to receive better GCSE outcomes and progress to competitive universities. Findings from HEAT showed that students who participated in The Scholars Programme in Year 10 were more likely to achieve a 9-5 in maths and English at GCSE than students within their schools who scored similarly at Key Stage 2. For the eighth year, UCAS data has shown that Year 12 students who complete The Scholars Programme are statistically significantly more likely to apply to a competitive university than students from similar backgrounds, and as a result they also progress to a competitive university at a higher rate.
