    The longer the interview process the less likely you’ll get the candidate you want. Hiring managers put so much time and energy into hiring – so it’s a massive shame when it falls apart not because of the opportunity or company, but just due to time. And it’s happening so much more often now - having spent well over 10 years in finance recruitment I’ve never seen the candidate market move as fast as it does now. An incredibly competitive market and online interviewing have speeded things up so there’s little room for delay. The best finance talent is in high demand. In addition, overly long hiring times can undermine people’s opinion of a business – so even if you’re not competing against another offer, a negative experience for the applicant can lead to rejection. Sometimes delays can’t be helped but here’s a few things you can do to try and avoid the process stalling: ✅ Plan the process in advance: Decide on how many interview stages there will be and who will be involved (and check their availability). ✅ Prepare for problems: Have a backup list of interviewers in case people aren’t available on the day, to avoid having to rearrange meetings. ✅ Maintain flexibility: Consider advancing a good candidate through the stages so that you can maintain momentum (rather than waiting to arrange 2nd interviews until you’ve seen everyone at 1st stage). ✅ Keep communicating!: If there’s a delay, keep the candidate updated so you manage their expectations, and they can manage other processes they’re involved in.     Really encouraging to see that so many of the businesses listed in the #TheSundayTimesHundred fastest-growing companies have plans to hire over the next year – with some looking to double in size in that time. It’s been a tough 18 months for businesses of all types but leaders of privately owned and smaller businesses have found it particularly challenging – so it’s great to read about those that have endured (and even thrived) during this period and are now in a position to scale up. Both TalentEdge and Troi have years of experience helping startups and SMEs to expand their teams including quite a few of those that made the list this year, and although there are still some uncertainties for founders and CEOs (a major one of which is set to be resolved with Thursday’s election) we’re seeing confidence continue to grow and with it the appetite for investing in talent. Despite their young age, they are eager to learn about the life of a recruiter and gain insights into the finance industry. Their enthusiasm and tech-savviness are already evident, which bodes well for their future careers – hoping to inspire them to be potential CFOs or CEOs. In addition to professional skills, they will also master the art of making a great cup of tea – an essential skill for building connections at work.     "the talent is really what’s going to drive the difference. We will always back a phenomenal team in a crappy market, rather than the inverse.” Great interview with Danny Rimer of Index Ventures published in the Financial Times yesterday – given he’s one of the most successful and respected VC investors it’s no surprise that he’s got lots of interesting insights to share. There’s a link in the comments below – definitely worth a read for anyone interested.   He talks about talent being that factor that will “drive the difference” when it comes to deciding who they back, and how they assess founders not only by their experience and "story" but crucially what they’ve learnt from their mistakes.   Aside from the founders, the CFO often plays a pivotal role when fund raising and can add much needed credibility and reassurance (as well as being very effective storytellers). TalentEdge have a really strong track record of working with founders of early-stage startups to hire finance leaders for them with fund raising experience to help tip the balance in their favour.     CFO or CVO. It's a question of driving value over and above safeguarding the assets. Great event this morning hosted by TalentEdge/ Talentarc about the value role of the CFO beyond the spreadsheet. It was a scintillating conversation centred around data…and how the CFO is well-placed to drive valuable game-changing insight. Beyond Financial Stewardship, businesses with a growth mindset are enabling their CFO’s to drive insights from complex data sets that not only include production, ways of working and efficiencies…but also customer data, pricing and service profitability. Key learnings for me included: - Develop a data strategy, like you would a business strategy, with clear and measurable accountabilities - Figure out your lifetime customer value, and make it better. Deliver to those clients that most value what you do. - Simplify, simplify, simplify. There is way too much data out there and businesses get overwhelmed. Choose the data relevant to the business objectives and package it simply so it resonates clearly. - Automate as much as you can to free up valuable finance and commercial resource to focus on insights.  - Train your juniors to write narratives around the numbers, so you teach them early on to look for the underlying insights in the data and the requisite stories they present. - Listen to your organisation. Across all levels of the business, there are clues as to what is working and what’s not. Too often there are learnings at the coal face that never surface resulting in too many lost opportunities. - Be curious. The CFO has an objective perspective and the analytical mindset to challenge what others may perceive as the status quo. By asking difficult questions of the organisation there are opportunities to drive improvements and added value!
