I know a lot of the CFOs I work with play a critical role in resource allocation and operating efficiency, as well as investment for growth in the business - they are key in preserving profit margins and enabling growth. It’s great to see a good news story from marketing services and Publicis are providing plenty of them right now in terms of both profit margin and organic growth. The latest results included an announcement that there’s a record bonus pot of 540m Euros to be shared amongst their 102,000 staff. As a recruiter,  I am happy to see that they also made 3700 net hires (+1800 through acquisition) - and they expect to keep hiring!  I am also interested to see their effective strategy to reduce freelancers with more effective resource sharing across the businesses. The Publicis success is a great reminder that successful leadership during tough times is a careful balancing act between controlling costs while ensuring you preserve your biggest asset as much as possible - which is your talent. And I am proud to have played a small part in that in supporting them to hire the UK CFO last year!

Has the rapid advent of AI-powered technology changed the conversations CFOs in marketing services are having with their boards regarding investing in emerging tech? WPP are announcing plans today to invest a further £250m on AI-focused tech (Financial Times), this follows a similar announcement by Publicis last week pledging investment of 300m Euros over the next 3 years. It’s clear the AI arms race is heating up quickly across the big groups but where does that leave the smaller agencies? Last year was dominated by debates around the potential risks and huge advantages of AI across marketing services, but much of it was at best conjecture. When we discussed AI at our Talentarc and TalentEdge leadership events, there was cautious excitement but also a great deal of “we’re not sure” and “we’ll have to wait and see”. Undoubtedly as their competitors start upping the ante, many CEOs will want to start increasing investment in AI as well to stay competitive ( and for some small agencies it may be a great way to punch above their weight) – but how do finance leaders manage the risk, particularly in these challenging times ?  #ai #marketingagency #cfoinsights #cfo #marcomms

TalentEdge and Talentarc are focusing particularly strongly on ESG and sustainability this year, in part because we are starting our own journey towards becoming a certified B Corp, and also because issues related to ESG are rapidly moving up the priority list for much of our network, if it isn’t a priority already. We are already seeing clients hiring to meet the reporting needs in this area, but according to most experts, Finance’s involvement doesn’t stop there.   It’s clear that CFOs are key players in the process of businesses assessing the risks and sizing up the opportunities that a strong ESG agenda and a greater push towards “profit with purpose” present. They don’t just oversee the data and manage the reporting in this area – in many cases they’re the ones pushing to make it part of the organisation’s value proposition.   At our next C-Suite Leadership event on March 12th we will be exploring how CFOs can best manage the risks and opportunities of greater sustainability, ESG and becoming a B Corp.
