Our Gardening Club, run by Mr Iczkiewicz, Teacher of Science, has been busy cultivating various fruits and vegetables this year, from planting potatoes and raspberries to nurturing cucamelons in the greenhouse. Pupils have shown remarkable dedication and enthusiasm to watering and tending to the planters, which were donated to the school by the Jack Petchey Foundation. Yesterday, our Gardening Club harvested their radishes, which have been incredibly successful this year. John C, First Form, commented: "I joined the Gardening Club at the beginning of the term after collecting the seedling kits from Marks & Spencer and growing my own fruit and vegetables at home. I like to cook with the produce we grow and enjoy them with my family." Daniel G, First Form, added an excellent gardening tip: "Did you know that the chemical from onions that makes you cry is also a natural slug and snail repellant?" The Gardening Club meet every Wednesday and Thursday. This hands-on experience not only teaches pupils about sustainable living but also provides an activity for them to unwind during lunchtime. Thank you to Mr Iczkiewicz, for running the club and inspiring our pupils to grow their own fruit and vegetables.

Civil Engineering Undergraduate with particular interest in Geotechnics

Bula, Network! For just over a month, I've had the privilege of working with a remarkable group of people to construct a medical dispensary in Vanuakula, Naitasiri Province on behalf of Think Pacific . I've learned a lot throughout my time away. Not only has it helped me understand my career choice, as a civil engineering student, from a fresh viewpoint, but being away in an environment that is nearly polar opposites to my own has shifted my perspective on some things and outlined aspects of my own life that I may have taken for granted or that I need to improve! The people of Vanuakula have such tremendous faith, it's no surprise that the village continues to prosper! Once again, I’m so thankful for the relationships I made in the village and will forever cherish this opportunity. Romans 8:35,37 best puts what I’m trying to say! “Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loves us.” I would also like to thank Danny Threapleton for all his support throughout the project, Jack Petchey Foundation for their generous grant and Coventry University ‘s Talent team for their unwavering support before and during departure. #internationalopportunity #careerdevelopment #community #fiji #nonprofit #summerintern #civilengineering #engineering

Our Count on Us Maths Challenge increases students' confidence in numeracy and helps them develop a sense of belonging and ambition that can help them thrive. It's part of what we do to provide skills to young Londoners to help them feel comfortable and empowered for the world of work. As we count down to this year's final we asked those involved in the challenge how Count on Us has helped them.    ✖️ Annoor took part in 2018 and is currently studying Mathematics and Computer Science:  “The maths challenge gave me motivation for maths, beyond my GCSEs/A Levels.”    ➕ His sister, Farza, also took part last year and is currently undergoing her GCSEs:  “It has helped me become more involved in discussions and competitions.”    ➗ Charlie is a member of our Youth Board and took part in Count on Us as a year 8 student:      “It really boosted my confidence and it made maths seem fun. Empathy and respect for what others have to say are skills that we used... and are skills I still use today as a tutor. In the future, I want to be a teacher or data analyst, which both use maths.”    The Count on Us Maths Challenge is supported by the Jack Petchey Foundation and delivered in partnership with Chris Olley from the Maths Zone. This year's final takes place at City Hall this Wednesday 26 June.    Read more about our Employability and Skills work 👉 https://bit.ly/3XzTgxe

💬 "The Sutton Trust Summer School was fundamental in getting me where I am today. It opened the door and gave me opportunities that I would not have otherwise." Katie grew up in a village in Somerset. Both of her parents are disabled and she went to a state secondary school before going onto a Further Education college in a town 50 minutes away by bus. Almost nobody she knew had gone to university, so when she first started at college, she was even sure she wanted to go into higher education. But it was at college when she was told about our Summer Schools! She went onto our Geography Summer School at the University of Cambridge. Initially, Katie had no intention of applying for an undergraduate as she felt it wasn't the right path for her, but her experience on our programme changed her mind. 💬 "The fact that I went from not even considering applying to Cambridge to desperate to go is a testament to how amazing the Summer school was at making me feel like I belonged there." Fast forward to today, and Katie currently works as a Research Associate at the University of Manchester 🚀 Check out more of our alum stories for Social Mobility Day 👇 https://buff.ly/2TaXyGl
