First hand experiences in the outdoors

About us

Field Studies Council is an environmental education charity. Founded in 1943, we are best known for providing residential and day field trips for those studying biology and geography. But our mission is to create outstanding opportunities for everyone to learn about nature. We are the only environmental education charity dedicated to helping people of all ages to experience the environment at first hand; to discover, explore and be inspired by the natural world. Each year over 140,000 people visit our Centres either as a child on a family holiday, a young person on a school fieldtrip, an adult on a leisure learning course or a teacher on a professional development course.

🦋 This week is the start of Butterfly Conservation's Big Butterfly Count 2024! 🐛 👉From 12 July - 4 August, we are encouraged to spend 15 minutes in a sunny spot to help gather vital data on butterflies and moths, as sensitive indicators of the health of our environment. 🦋 Head to their profile to find out more on how to get involved, where to download the app, and how you can help save our beautiful summer 🌟So why are we looking for moths as well? Aren't moths night-flying insects? Well, there are many moths that you will only see at night, but there are many that can be seen out in the day. This can come as a surprise, and it may be that what you thought was a butterfly is actually a moth! There are always exceptions to rules though so here are the two basic ways to distinguish between butterflies and moths: 🌟 Antennae - UK butterfly antennae are usually thin, always clubbed, and never feathery! 🌟 Wings - Butterflies normally fold their wings high and closed when at rest, while most moths rest with their wings open, or down their backs. 🦋 We're sharing a link to our day flying moth chart below, and a few close-ups in this post to help you distinguish the difference, and maybe ID what you spot! https://ow.ly/nsfs50SA8Vy Good luck with your count! #Butterflies #Moths #Lepidoptera #BigButterflyCount

Talk about CPD with a view! I had a great time at Field Studies Council Preston Montford with John Handley, learning about the NVC system, with specific focus on grassland and indicator species identification for different NVC communities. I'm excited to put this new knowledge into practice at FPCR.

Have you been lucky enough to hear the distinct sound of summer, as grasshoppers start singing? July, August and September are the peak months to look for grasshoppers, bush-crickets, groundhoppers and earwigs. Grasshoppers and bush-crickets overwinter as eggs, hatch as nymphs in spring, then mature as adults from June to August, persisting until the first frosts. Adult males can be heard singing from early June onwards. So now is the perfect time to keep an ear open. David Williams has written and illustrated a new AIDGAP guide to the grasshoppers, bush-crickets, groundhoppers and earwigs of Wales, Scotland, Ireland and England north of a line from Gloucester to Ipswich. To celebrate the new publication, we have a new blog post on our website introducing these fascinating insects, explaining why it is so important to get involved with recording, and even tips on how to identify them from their song! The new AIDGAP is available for a special earlybird price of just £10 if ordered by 31 July 2024, and you can read the blog here: https://lnkd.in/eu8c6PpD #Grasshoppers, #BushCrickets #Groundhoppers #Earwig
