Nightjar surveys offer a tangible way to measure the progress of Nature Recovery Projects such as Heathland Connections. 🐦 At places like Thursley National Nature Reserve, a dedicated Reserve Manager works alongside a team of passionate volunteers throughout the winter to maintain the open habitats essential for rare species. The distinctive sound of nightjars in spring and summer is a sign of successful habitat management that contributes to growing the national Nature Recovery Network. Victoria Hawkins, Senior Advisor for Heathland Connections, recently led BBC Countryfile presenter Joe Crowley on a night time survey to see if the efforts of collaborative hard work to create healthy nesting habitats had paid off. Read our latest blog to find out if they had. https://lnkd.in/gM6Et_id #NatureRecoveryNetwork #HeathlandConnections #Nightjar

Newhouse Farm is building a climate resilient business. 🚜 Working closely with Natural England’s Catchment Sensitive Farming advisers and the Forestry Commission, Newhouse Farm is taking steps to reduce its carbon footprint and improve soil quality. The farm has changed its crop rotation, nutrient management and grown trees to capture carbon. Watch the full-length video on YouTube to learn more about this LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming) demonstration farm and the options you could explore for your own farming business. https://lnkd.in/eXcWHSeg #ClimateResilience #NatureFriendlyFarming

Investing in nature provides benefits for nature and people. 🤝 Purple Horizons is a fantastic example of what can be achieved with the right funding, partnerships and long-term vision for nature recovery as we grow a national Nature Recovery Network. Watch and listen to our partners Walsall Council and Birmingham & Black Country Wildlife Trust to learn more about the positive impacts of investing in nature. ⬇️ This project is also happening in partnership with University of Birmingham, Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, Butterfly Conservation, Canal & River Trust, Environment Agency, Staffordshire County Council, Lichfield District Council, West Midlands Combined Authority, Black Country Geopark and Friends of Pelsall Commons. How much carbon is held in grasslands, wood pastures and traditional orchards? 🍎 Nature Returns is a partnership that’s gathering data to answer questions like this, to build the evidence for nature-based solutions to climate change. Working with partners including Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Wakehurst, we are measuring the change in carbon and biodiversity levels when nature is restored. Planting wood pastures and other semi-natural habitats is an example of a nature-based solution that can offer multiple benefits to people in the face of a changing climate. Benefits like: 🌾 Food security 💧 Clean water 🌊 Flood protection Nature Returns aims to quantify the potential of these solutions with data, enabling governments and businesses alike to deliver improved, cost-effective outcomes for biodiversity, people and climate. Why are we creating habitat for great crested newts? 🦎 Great crested newts are the largest of the UK’s three native species of newt and are a great indicator of the health of a water source – they will travel up to 1km to find the right pond. Over the last 100 years, great crested newts have disappeared from many sites right across Europe, mainly because of pond loss and intensive agriculture. Alongside delivering Natural England's own District Level Licensing scheme, we are working with Nature Space Partnership NatureSpace Partnership (NSP) and Newt Conservation Partnership Newt Conservation Partnership (NCP) to share knowledge and evaluate the outcomes of the schemes. NCP create and restore ponds for great crested newts under the NSP District Licensing scheme. Monitoring of the partnership’s ponds already shows they are supporting great crested newts and a variety of freshwater invertebrates. What are our top tips on BNG for Local Planning Authorities? 🏡 Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) became mandatory in England this year. It’s an approach that aims to leave biodiversity in a measurably better state than before development took place. We’ve been working with Local Planning Authorities on how to include BNG and have noted three key learnings: 💡Be strategic - align with Local Nature Recovery Strategies for maximum impact and best use of finite staff resource 🤝 Work with others - join the Planning Advisory Service’s BNG sessions for peer support and resource sharing ➗ Divide tasks - focus on what is a “need to do” and what is a “nice to do” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eWuMJGV2 📷: Thakeham. Are you a housing developer in the Poole Harbour catchment area? 🏗️ We are pleased to announce that from 31 July 2024, you may be able to apply to Natural England for nutrient credits. One nutrient credit mitigates 1 kilogram (kg) of nitrogen pollution. Therefore, buying the required number of credits is one way for housing developers to meet the nutrient neutrality requirements within the planning process. Nutrient neutrality will help protect Poole Harbour and its internationally important wildlife, like the spoonbill, from additional nutrient pollution. Credits will be available to developers of any size who have submitted a planning application for a permanent residential development in the Poole Harbour catchment area. The application round opens at 10:00 on 31 July 2024 and closes at 23:55 on 27 August 2024. Find out more in our latest blog: https://lnkd.in/eWcC6PbJ #NutrientMitigation #NutrientNeutrality #SustainableDevelopment #Poole

Do you know someone working in the natural environment who has gone above and beyond? 🎖️ Every year, government organisations including Natural England can put forward nominations for the King’s Honours Lists. We know that ordinary people are doing extraordinary paid or unpaid work in the environmental sector every day. If you’d like to nominate someone you think deserves recognition, you'll need to: 📄 complete an honours nomination form highlighting how their contribution has changed things for the better 🤝 provide at least two letters of support from people who know or have experienced the impact of the work of the nominee To request a nomination form, please email honours@naturalengland.org.uk. It will need to be returned by Friday 9 August 2024. Calling all local planning authorities and developers 📢 We’ve launched a new tool to assist with planning applications. The Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) Impact Risk Zones Tool helps local planning authorities (LPAs) and developers make an initial assessment of the potential risks to SSSIs posed by development to decide if further consultation with Natural England is needed. Our recent improvements to the tool include an instant consultation response for many lower risk consultations. By improving the user experience and benefits of getting instant advice from Natural England, we hope that more LPAs will use the tool. With a simpler, clearer and more efficient service, together we can focus on delivering positive outcomes for nature.
