We unite researchers and clinicians to improve patient care by detecting cancer earlier and treating it more precisely.

About us

The Cancer Research UK Cambridge Centre is a partnership between the University of Cambridge, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Cancer Research UK. We are one of four major centres funded by Cancer Research UK within a network of seven translational research centres across the UK. We unite more than 1,200 laboratory researchers and healthcare professionals in Cambridge around a common mission to end death and disease caused by cancer through research, treatment and education. Our members populate Foundational Programmes and Virtual Institutes – the engines of our research – with a particular focus on early detection, personalised and integrated cancer medicine, and cancers of unmet need (lung, pancreatic, paediatric, brain and oesophageal cancer). Each programme and virtual institute facilitates cross-disciplinary research to drive the translation of the latest innovations in cancer science scientific discoveries into clinical applications to improve patient care. Our overarching strategy is to develop a proactive approach to cancer that diagnoses the disease as soon as possible and treats each patient precisely.

  • Congratulations to Centre members, Dr David Adams and Dr Emma Rawlins on their election to the European life sciences organisation, EMBO. They are among 120 scientists from across Europe and beyond who have been elected to the EMBO Membership, an honour that celebrates research excellence and outstanding achievements in the life sciences. David Adams is a member of our Fundamental Biology of Cancer Programme and is based at the Wellcome Sanger Institute. His team investigates how genetic alterations contribute to cancer development and the genetic wiring of cancer cells using approaches such as CRISPR genome editing. This provides fundamental insights into how cancers develop and evolve and how genetic changes in cancer genomes may be used as targets for cancer therapy. Emma Rawlins is a member of our Thoracic Cancer Programme and is based at the University of Cambridge’s Wellcome/ CRUK Gurdon Institute. Emma's lab works on lung stem and progenitor cell biology, combining innovative human organoid models with mouse genetics. She has a particular emphasis on control of lung cell fate and how this is altered in disease, including cancer. https://lnkd.in/e_k5HecT

  • Congratulations to our Director, Professor Richard Gilbertson!

Professor Richard Gilbertson, FRS, FMedSci, FRCP, EMBO has been chosen as the next Master by the Fellows of Gonville & Caius College. He is due to take office on October 1, 2025, following the retirement of Professor Pippa Rogerson. At a meeting on June 26, the Fellows of the College expressed their intention to pre-elect Professor Gilbertson, a paediatric oncology clinician scientist, as the 44th Master of the College in an appointment warmly welcomed by Fellows, students and staff. Professor Gilbertson is the Li Ka Shing Chair and Head of Department of Oncology at the University of Cambridge and Director of CRUK Cambridge Centre. His research focuses on understanding the link between disordered development and the multiple different brain tumour types observed in children. He is currently a Fellow of St John’s College, Cambridge. Professor Gilbertson said: “Gonville & Caius College is a tremendous academic institution with a remarkable history of impact that has changed the world for the better. I am both delighted and humbled to be joining the College as Master next year. “The future holds many opportunities and challenges for the College and I look forward to working with the entire Caius community to build on the achievements of my predecessors. I have been struck by the commitment, brilliance and warmth of the students, Fellows and staff I have met already and I am excited to be joining such a diverse community as together we continue the College's legacy of impactful, academic excellence.” The President, Professor Peter Robinson, said: “I wish to congratulate Richard on his success and thank the candidates who made the selection process highly competitive. “I wish to thank the many Fellows, staff members, students and alumni who enabled the smooth running of the election process.” In accordance with the College statutes, the binding vote by the College's Governing Body to pre-elect Professor Gilbertson will take place next May, followed by admission as Master in October 2025. Professor Rogerson announced in January her intention to retire, having become the College’s first female Master in October 2018.

  • You will often find our team at a variety of public events or in Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust with a stall. A key aspect of our mission is to share our work with patients and the public, helping them to better understand cancer research through engaging activities. For example, on International Clinical Trials Day in May, we set up a stall in the hospital outpatients area. We had a great time raising awareness about clinical trials and their crucial role in cancer research and treatment through games, including a jelly bean randomisation 'trial'. If you would like to find out more about our PPIE groups and how you can get involved, drop-in TODAY between 11am-2pm in the David Dunn Suite at Addenbrooke's Hospital to meet our team.
