A leading UK cancer research institute at Queen Mary University of London and a Cancer Research UK Centre of Excellence.
About us
Barts Cancer Institute (BCI) at Queen Mary University of London, is a leading UK cancer research institute, and key partner in the Cancer Research UK City of London Centre. Under the leadership of the Director, Professor Nitzan Rosenfeld, and supported by an Executive Board of senior investigators, we have created an academic environment fitting for an internationally recognised, comprehensive cancer centre. BCI, as part of the Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, is in the top 10 multi-faculty research institutions (REF 2014). Our staff and students focus their efforts on two objectives; how to increase the chances of survival through early detection and diagnosis; and improving patient survival through the discovery and development of more effective and innovative therapies. These objectives are underpinned by research into improving our understanding of the basic cell and molecular biology of cancer and the body’s natural immune response to it. We also use our expertise to teach and educate students and professionals about the science of and gold-standard clinical approaches to cancer, and to engage our local population. We hope to make the often difficult subject of cancer accessible to anyone that requires or is interested in our research.

Dr. Eimear Eileen Teehan MBBS(Hons) MSc (Distinction) 🎓 I am pleased to share my successful completion of six years at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry culminating in the achievement of my Medical degree and a Masters of Science (MSc) in Laparoscopic Surgery and Surgical Skills (Distinction) at Barts Cancer Institute (Queen Mary University of London). I am incredibly grateful for the profound level of unwavering support from my family, friends and mentors throughout the six-year journey whose encouragement and guidance have played a pivotal role in my success. Celebrating this achievement with family and friends last week at St Paul's Cathedral was incredibly special and a day I will cherish forever. I am looking forward to beginning the next phase of my career as a Foundation Year 1 Doctor at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust in the coming weeks, and applying my practical knowledge and skills under the guidance of experienced professionals. I am incredibly excited to begin this new phase, and look forward to working together with colleagues to deliver quality patient care. Congratulations to the class of 2024, we did it!

This summer, we are connecting 16–18-year-olds with their future careers through work experience and business insight days. Giving young Londoners the skills they need to springboard themselves into employment. Last week we connected students who are passionate about science, medicine, and research, with UCL Cancer Institute and Barts Cancer Institute (Queen Mary University of London) for in-person laboratory work experience. The students worked alongside biomedical PhD students to conduct their own experiments, took a bioinformatics master class and learned cutting-edge research techniques. These are the type of opportunities available to young people through our employability programme Access Aspiration. We work with state schools in under-resourced areas at a time when students are making crucial decisions about their futures. We give them the connections and information to open doors and get experience in careers they previously thought were unattainable. I felt very privileged to be able to help out with the STARS programme here at Barts earlier this week. Having taken part in a similar programme at the same age as these Year 12 students and being the first in my family to go to university I know first-hand just how important and influential experiences like this can be. Seeing the enthusiasm and engagement of the students for lab work was wonderful. Hopefully, by working alongside these brilliant students and sharing stories of my journey into scientific research, these young scientists will have the confidence and the experiences they need to start their own stories post A-Level. 😊🥼
One of the major benefits of #STARS2024 is the time our students have to chat to the Centre's scientists about their university experiences, their career plans, and the joys and challenges of life in the lab. 📸 "Science story time" in full swing, with Poppy Bradley and STARS at Barts Cancer Institute (Queen Mary University of London). I had an absolutely lovely time teaching these A-level students! They were fantastic in the lab and it was such a rewarding experience for everyone involved. Thanks #STARS2024 and Professor John F Marshall for letting me be a part of the programme.
Our work experience programme #STARS2024 wouldn't be possible without our wonderful demonstrators! Our talented colleagues and PhD students have been in the labs at Barts Cancer Institute (Queen Mary University of London), UCL and King's College London this week, teaching key skills and discussing their own career paths. 📸 Here's Lakshmi Rajput in action at Barts Cancer Institute (Queen Mary University of London).

“Our early tests show we can reduce the tumour burden and extend survival.” Meet Prof Kairbaan Hodivala-Dilke, the lead scientist behind two new #innovations from Barts Cancer Institute (Queen Mary University of London) that we’re working on at QMI: A new way to treat lung cancer, and a new use for an anti-cancer agent to treat heart failure. We interviewed Kairbaan about her innovations: - Why are lung cancer and heart failure so difficult to treat? “Most lung cancer patients already have advanced stage cancer when diagnosed. These advanced cancers are inoperable and respond poorly to anti-cancer treatments.” “It’s one of the reasons why lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide.” “Meanwhile heart failure affects 26 million people worldwide, with a 5-year mortality rate of 50%. There is no existing therapy to prevent disease progression for patients at risk.” “On top of this, indefinitely administrating current drugs increases the risk of side effects whilst offering no long-term benefit.” - Tell us about your innovations… “Both innovations use an αvβ3- and/or αvβ5-integrin targeting agent.” “Our new method for treating lung cancer improves the efficacy of immunotherapy and chemotherapy – which currently work for less than a third of lung cancer patients and add barely a year of life expectancy.” “The treatment works by co-administering an αvβ3- and/or αvβ5-integrin targeting agent alongside the immunotherapy/chemotherapy. Our early tests show we can reduce the tumour burden, extend survival, and allow for lower doses of immunotherapy/chemotherapy – thereby reducing side effects.” “For heart failure, we found that giving a low dose of αvβ3- and/or αvβ5-integrin targeting agent to the patient promotes normal cardiac angiogenesis, endothelial cell activation and cardiomyocyte function.” “We expect this will also be useful for other conditions involving malfunctioning vasculature.” QMI are looking for a partner to help develop these innovations further and bring them to patients. Speak with Mark Gurden to learn more.
