We back people to protect rainforest and fight the climate crisis.
About us
We’re Cool Earth. We exist to champion the relationship between people, rainforest and climate. We raise and give cash directly, and partner with indigenous people and local communities on projects that tackle the root causes of deforestation. Right now the world is in a climate crisis. People have lived in balance with forest for thousands of years. The real rainforest experts, now face extreme injustice whilst living on the front line of the climate crisis. The most effective way to fight back is to protect the best carbon-storing technology that already exists: rainforest. And the best way to do that? Back, support and listen to the people living there with Cool Earth.

The UK is one of the world's most nature-depleted countries, with one in six species now threatened with extinction. Cool Earth has signed the letter and joins the calls for the new Labour government to expand the role of Special Representative for Climate Change to include #BiodiversityProtection.

It's #WorldChocolateDay 🍫🤤 Did you know that chocolate is produced in the heart of the Amazon rainforest!? 🍃 We've been supporting the Awajún people living in the Amazon rainforest to create a stable source of income through cacao production. Sustainable businesses like this help rainforest communities thrive. 💚 Chocolate bars, cacao juice, hot chocolate and cacao-based jams are just some of the tasty products that the community are now producing directly from the rainforest!

"So far, it is mostly broken promises." - this quote from a recent article in the Financial Times neatly sums up why the carbon market is failing the rainforest and its people. To protect rainforests, we must listen to the people who live there. Their voices, not carbon credits, hold the key to long-term, equitable solutions to the climate crisis. My take? The carbon market is like a British prime minister's tenure - full of grand promises, little follow-through and too often leaves a big old mess for others to clean up. Real conservation starts with communities, not carbon calculators. #RainforestProtection #CarbonMarket #CoolEarth #PeopleFirst https://lnkd.in/e9uhu2xu

"If the rainforest is still standing, it is thanks to the presence of Indigenous peoples" It's how Cool Earth keeps rainforest standing and fights the climate crisis.
40% of the Amazon is under some form of protection — more than officially recorded A new study reveals that more than 40% of land across nine Amazonian countries is under some form of conservation management, significantly higher than the 28% reported in official records, reports Liz Kimbrough, Ph.D.. The full breakdown: ➡ State-designated protected areas: 2.23 million sq km (16.4%) ➡ State-recognized Indigenous lands: 2.22 million sq km (16.3%) ➡ IPLC-led conservation areas: 0.26 million sq km (1.91%) ➡ Community-based natural resource management systems: 0.21 million sq km (1.6%) ➡ Registered and reported privately protected areas: 0.014 million sq km (0.1%) The research highlights the crucial role of Indigenous peoples and local communities in conservation, with Indigenous territories and community-managed conservation areas accounting for nearly 20% of the total area of the Amazon. “If the forest is still standing, it is thanks to the presence of Indigenous peoples. And today, this is the most important mission of our planet. Because it is a mission that not only guarantees our lives but guarantees the lives of all people,” Txai Suruí, a Paiter Suruí Indigenous activist and coordinator of the Indigenous youth movement of Rondônia, said in a statement. Despite these findings, the Amazon still faces serious threats from deforestation, fire and climate change, leading some experts to question whether the global “30×30” conservation target is adequate. The study’s authors propose a new inventory approach to conservation planning, emphasizing the need to understand existing conservation efforts and governance structures before creating new protected areas or allocating resources. “Knowing who is governing these lands and how, as well as recognizing their visions related to conservation, is the first step to collectively planning for a fair and feasible future for our planet,” Siyu Qin, a lead author of the study, told Mongabay News. Qin, S., He, Y., Kroner, R. E. G., Shrestha, S., Coutinho, B. H., Karmann, M., … & Mascia, M. B. (2024). An inclusive, empirically grounded inventory facilitates recognition of diverse area-based conservation of nature. Fancy a crash course in mainstream nature conservation? Look no further than the link below. It's a long article so if you want a short summary, here it is. It doesn't work. Why? Because of fraudulent carbon offsets, because of trees and carbon being far more important than people and addressing blatant inequalities, and because, paradoxically, nature conservation is conceived by people who contribute to its destruction. Want an alternative? Check out what Cool Earth does. #RainforestProtection #IndigenousPeoples #ClimateFinance
