Enabling Disaster Resilient Cities to achieve Sustainable Development Earlier this month, SHE Changes Climate was invited to engage in a Trainer of Trainers workshop, guided by this topic, at the Miranda House College at Delhi University. Our Executive Director Mamta Borgoyary and India Lead Coordinator Dr. Chetana Naskar (PhD) participated in the workshop, with Mamta leading a powerful discussion on the 'Importance of Gendered Narrative in Climate Change and DRR', where she highlighted: — the glaring statistics of the unequal impact of climate-related disasters on women, both within India and globally; — the severe effects of heat waves and heat stress on women's health, which increase health risks and mortality rates; and emphasized — that to achieve gender-inclusive climate action, we need more women in leadership positions, bringing their perspectives and experiences into decision-making processes, and greater consultation with women during planning and policy-making. Dr. Chetana added a crucial perspective on how marginalized women, who already live in extremely vulnerable conditions in cities, face increased hardships due to climate-induced events. She cited the example of homeless women and children in Delhi who experience extreme difficulties during severe heat and rain seasons. The workshop was organized in collaboration with the Urban Studies and Research Centre (USRC), the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) and the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA). #SHEChangesClimate #SustainableDevelopment #ResilientCities #WomenInLeadership #GenderEquality #ClimateAction

The Matriarchs of Resilience Despite the prolonged drought that has recently shaken the lives and livelihoods of many living in the Horn of Africa, pastoralist communities like the Maasai in Kenya continue to slowly adapt to the current times. It’s not easy, particularly for the women, whose increased care work leaves them without enough time to earn a living. In a bid to pay homage to the unsung heroes of this vibrant community, two Maasai women have taken a bold stride beyond the confines of traditional expectations, and instead picked up cameras to show the lives of the Matriarchs nurturing resilient Maasai people. What came of this pursuit was a photo exhibition, launched in Nairobi last week. With the spotlight on her, there is room for optimism regarding advancements in peacebuilding efforts, enhanced assistance to global south, more emphasis on climate change policies, and most crucially, the promotion of empathy and recognition of diverse viewpoints, something she has displayed over the years. When women thrive, the world thrives. This enduring message guides Fondation Chanel where our current programs directly impact the lives of over 9 million women and girls around the world and indirectly we impact the lives of many millions more through policy work and systems change. Over the past few years we have increased our work on the intersection of climate and gender, recognizing that women are often those most impacted by the climate crisis and that we won’t solve the climate crisis without both men and women at the table. To date we have granted over $25m to these partners focussed on women-led climate resilience and justice. An example of this are the entrepreneurial community and nature stewards at NEWS (Nature Environment & Wildlife Society) in India, helping to restore mangroves and strengthening their communities economic autonomy and resilience to climate change. Since 2011 approximately 16 million mangroves have been planted by thousands of women - improving biodiversity, protecting from flooding and providing opportunities for additional income by protecting and restoring the shrinking mangroves. As we enter the Summer seeing record temperatures across the globe already this year I would like to recognize our partners in Fondation CHANEL dedicated to addressing the gender and climate crisis and building gender and climate just future. www.naturewildlife.org
