“With our new government promising ‘security, fairness and opportunity for all’, it is essential that children are at the heart of their immediate priorities,” said our CEO Lynn Perry. “With 4.3 million children growing up in poverty, around 1.4 million living with a mental health condition and far too many facing sexual or criminal exploitation, we were pleased that today’s King’s Speech included many encouraging first steps in addressing these issues. “However, the vital changes children need can only be achieved with investment. “We strongly urge the government to take bold action in the autumn spending review to tackle the child poverty emergency and to invest in the future health and wellbeing of the next generation. “This must start with finally committing to ending the two-child limit on universal credit.” To read more visit: https://bit.ly/4bIQXeR #KingsSpeech

Last week our Northern Ireland, SEEN ambassadors, hosted an exhibit of their work ‘Life Through My Lens’ in London. We spoke to Taleen, Ali and Doreen about their experiences, and how they have grown throughout the project.💚 We hope this project will provoke professional curiosity, resulting in holistic and thorough assessments that challenge assumptions and ensure safety for all children and young people. "I think it’s important to say that there's often a misconception, even sometimes within autism services themselves, that people with autism should all be treated the same universally." Caleb, 18, from Northern Ireland, was diagnosed with autism at 16. Supported by Barnardo’s PosAbility service for the past two years, Caleb shares his journey from struggling with undiagnosed autism in primary school to finding transformative support through Barnardo’s. He shares his experiences of overcoming stereotypes and misconceptions about autism. Caleb advocates for better autism education in schools and emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis. His journey is a testament to resilience and the power of understanding and support. NEW: Today we release the first overview of published research on child sexual abuse of African, Asian, and Caribbean heritage children. Currently, very little is known about the scale and nature of child sexual abuse of African, Asian and Caribbean heritage children in England and Wales. But existing survey data suggests the likelihood of being sexually abused does not vary significantly between ethnic groups. To address this knowledge gap, the CSA Centre and Barnardo's SEEN commissioned the Child and Woman Abuse Studies Unit at London Metropolitan University to produce a detailed knowledge overview, collating and highlight learnings across the existing body of research. This new review explores the nature of sexual abuse, its impacts, the barriers that prevent children of African, Asian and Caribbean heritage talking about it, and how concerns about it are identified and responded to. It identifies learning and actions which could be applied to practice and also highlights the limitations and significant gaps in the research base despite a ‘research explosion’ in recent years. It brings into stark focus the need for further research to inform and drive improvements. Download the knowledge review on the CSA Centre website: https://lnkd.in/g_NsiJQp

Congratulations The Rt Hon Keir Starmer and The Labour Party on winning the General Election. We look forward to working together to tackle inequality in education and make education fair for every child and young person, regardless of their socioeconomic background. https://lnkd.in/gnXkRMDk On election night we were delighted to hear Secretary of State for Education, The Rt Hon Bridget Phillipson MP, promise to “tear down the barriers to opportunity which hold back too many of our children”. Today we’re launching Fair Education in 2024: Priorities for a New Government – providing the new Government with policies that prioritise, above all else, tackling inequality. We also look at fresh ideas already being implemented by some of our coalition of 300 members, and invite the Government to work with us all to develop and implement solutions together. Please join us in sharing this as widely as possible, as we speak with one unified voice – fair education is achievable! https://lnkd.in/gnXkRMDk #FairEdForAll

🌟 This powerful video features young people speaking out about their hopes for the future. Here's what they're asking for: ✳️ Help end child poverty once and for all ✳️ Support families to give their children the best possible life chances ✳️ Keep children safe from harm ✳️ Support children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing ✳️ Transform support and opportunities for young people in and leaving care ✳️ Ensure all unaccompanied children seeking sanctuary have access to support, services, and protection. Their voices matter. We want the new government to make children and young people a priority. Let’s take action together to make these hopes a reality.
