Abt Global is doing its part in the fight against climate change by implementing various global projects: 👉 The USAID Comprehensive Action for Climate Change Initiative (#CACCI), USAID's global flagship program, helps nations meet their Paris Agreement climate commitments by creating programs and policies to mitigate and adapt to climate change. 👉 The USAID Caribbean Resilient Economies and Sectors (#RESET) Program is working to reduce barriers to public and private finance to build climate and disaster resilience and support the adoption of climate-smart practices in critical sectors 👉 The USAID Mongolia Energy Governance (#MEG) Activity is promoting a #GenderJustEnergyTransition by providing women and youth with training in emerging green technologies and leadership skills to empower them as change agents in Mongolia’s transition away from fossil fuels. 👉 The USAID Health Electrification and Telecommunications Alliance (#HETA) is providing reliable access and digital connectivity to health facilities in Africa using renewable energy technologies. 👉 The DFAT Partnerships for Improving Education (PIE) is working with education stakeholders in PNG to adopt approaches and mechanisms that reduce climate risks, including through the mainstreaming of disaster risk reduction and disaster risk management in school leadership and management training, implementing #GreenInfrastructure projects in educational facilities, implementing awareness campaigns, and supporting renewable energy solutions in schools. #ClimateAction #LCAW London Climate Action Week

Clean Energy | Climate | Gender Equality and Social Inclusion

It was a privilege to attend last month's Climate Innovation Forum 2024 (#CIF2024), the flagship event of London Climate Action Week (#LCAW). CIF takes place annually at the mid-way point between COPs, and brings together leaders, experts, and advocates representing policy, business, and finance from around the world to forge pathways to successful climate action. Some of my takeaways: 🌍 Global spending on clean energy technologies is projected to reach $2 trillion in 2024, double the $1 trillion expected to be spent on fossil fuels. Though over 600 million people in Africa have no access to electricity and around 1 billion have no access to clean cooking fuels, the continent is projected to receive only around $40 billion (or 2%) of this figure. 🌍 The cost of capital for renewable energy projects like solar PV and wind is still high in emerging economies—sometimes more than twice than what they cost in advanced economies. This reduces their financial viability and competitiveness and makes it difficult for developers to access affordable financing for clean energy projects. Bringing down this cost is essential to unlocking renewable energy growth in these economies. 🌍 Policy can be both an enabler of and a barrier to climate action. It can effectively achieve objectives like building energy security or competitiveness or reducing air pollution, but it can be derailed by bureaucratic, political, and financial hurdles. It can also achieve the opposite outcome if poorly designed/grossly misaligned with other policy goals. 🌍 Estimates vary, but trillions are required over the next three decades to meet climate goals. The private sector is critical in mobilizing this money globally and investing it in game-changing technologies that are rapidly coming online. Multilaterals and donors can unlock additional funding through blended finance. 🌍 Young people play a crucial role in driving climate change accountability They want to be meaningfully involved in formulating the next round of nationally determined contributions (NDCs), national adaptation plans (NAPs), and biennial transparency reports (BTRs). Governments and the private sector can facilitate their involvement by creating more spaces for them to share their views, enhancing education, awareness, and capacity building, and investing in green education. 🌍 Given their nature as fairly risk-tolerant and flexible entities, philanthropic organizations are well-placed to help unlock public and private funds and accelerate and scale climate solutions. 🌍 Climate change is a global issue, but most solutions require a local approach. Climate change policies and preparedness strategies attract community support and are most effective if they are established through inclusive processes. #AbtGlobal #ClimateResilience #ClimateMitigation

The Democratic Republic of the Congo's rural areas are dealing with challenges in tuberculosis control. Patients face stigma and lack of testing resources and often miss their treatment, which increases drug-resistant cases. Our USAID Integrated Health Program collaborates with the National Tuberculosis Control Program to address this. The goal is to train community influencers to change perceptions about tuberculosis. Additionally, the program provides grants to local organisations, enabling them to partner with diagnosis and treatment centres for testing, clinical follow-up, and nutritional support. Access to clean and safe food is essential to prevent foodborne illnesses and ensure food security 🌽 The Feed the Future Bangladesh Nutrition Activity is addressing food safety threats by focusing on local food markets and household practices. The local food markets lack the infrastructure required to maintain hygiene standards. Additionally, a lack of food safety education and awareness contributes to food contamination, especially in areas where clean water is not readily available. By employing an integrated market systems approach and utilising various social and behavioural change strategies, the Activity is dedicated to creating healthier environments and providing resources to those in Bangladesh who need them the most. Read the latest story to learn more about the Activity’s impact 👇 https://lnkd.in/eigfm2Kk #Bangladesh #Nutrition #FoodSecurity

It was a pleasure to join a panel at #DSA2024 today engaging with fellow practitioners and researchers working in and with NGOs/CSOs for some critical reflection on the localisation agenda from social justice perspectives. Some food for thought: 🌏 Are we colonizing the decolonization debate? Why do most debates on localisation happen in countries in the Global North rather than in the majority world? £💲Does the traditional international aid system need to evolve into newer forms of funding - philanthropy, development impact bonds, CSR? 🤝 Should we move forward from the talk of building ‘partnerships’ characterized with the same power imbalance to nurture 'local decision spaces' where local actors have more power over programmatic decision making? 📝 What is the extent of freedom researchers really have in studying development issues if prescriptive Terms of Reference define it all even before applications are drawn up? ⚖ How do we prevent localisation from being ‘organised hypocrisy’ where decisions & actions of international organisations are disconnected from their talk? ⚖ How do we shift the mentality where ‘project is king’ and where professionalism is the only currency, to trust-based solidarity. 💱 How can the architecture of subcontracting evolve to enable more funding flows to local actors? 📣 How can we ‘listen’ to local voices and be inclusive in communication given the hegemony of English in the international development sector? Uzbekistan ranks in the top 30 countries with cases of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB). Across USAID’s 'reach, cure, prevent, innovate, and sustain' strategic objectives, challenges and bottlenecks persist that impede the country from reaching its TB targets. Our five-year USAID TB Free Uzbekistan activity works on several fronts to improve the quality and availability of TB services and drugs while reducing stigma for better support and treatment. Partners include Uzbekistan’s National TB Program, health facilities and laboratories, and community organizations. Learn more 👇 https://lnkd.in/eUmiHYQc #GlobalHealth #Tuberculosis

Let's talk ENERGY. This is one of the key themes of London Climate Action Week, and it was also a pressing issue at the recent Ukraine Recovery Conference, underscoring the urgent need for reliable energy supplies. Once the Ukraine Recovery Conference was over, we met with our delivery partners of Abt Global in Ukraine, Kyiv School of Economics, Центр економічної стратегії / Centre for Economic Strategy, and KPMG, to discuss crucial lessons and next steps to drive Ukraine’s inclusive recovery and reconstruction. The energy sector is a pivotal area for investment and development. We must prioritise projects aimed at rebuilding and modernising energy infrastructure, with a significant focus on flexible and renewable energy capacities to reduce dependency on monopolies. At Abt, we recognise that sustainable energy solutions are fundamental to building resilient communities and ensuring long-term recovery and development. Addressing energy challenges is central to achieving broader climate and recovery goals. #LCAW2024 #URC2024 #ClimateAction #Ukraine

Abt Global, in collaboration with Save the Children UK, and our partners came together for an engaging learning and networking experience during London Climate Action Week. Our panellists represented 16 time zones, with participants from Barbados, India, Australia, and Sub-Saharan Africa. A panel discussion underscored the pivotal role of international, national, and local initiatives in fostering climate resilience and transforming education systems. Speakers reflected on the disproportionate challenges children and youth experience during climate events, including access to education for girls, learning disruptions, and gender-based violence. They shared examples of interventions from diverse global contexts for addressing these, including embedding climate change in school curricula, training teachers and school administrators in disaster risk reduction and management to improve school disaster preparedness, and funding school infrastructure projects to strengthen climate and disaster resilience. A Roundtable focused on empowering women and youth in vulnerable communities for climate adaptation." Speakers reflected on the positive developments coming from development partners, donors, managing contractors, and NGOs on adaptation. They emphasised the need to simplify adaptation for private and other investors to increase the uptake and interest of the private sector and financial institutions. We also heard about new, data-informed approaches donors, including Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, the Green Climate Fund and EBRD, are taking to improve inclusion, leverage and impact. These institutions are raising the bar on gender equality and integrating young people's perspectives into adaptation interventions. Satyendra Prasad from Abt Global closed the session, speaking from Australia. He emphasised the impacts on Pacific islands and warned about the substantial consequences of failing to address climate adaptation, which could result in a significant divide between those who can afford to adapt and those who cannot. Satyendra said: "We must combine these different puzzle pieces and apply them programmatically. I look forward to COP31 and the possibility of a better and more integrated framework for adaptation. We are raising the bar on what success looks like." Many thanks to our esteemed panellists and moderators Daljeet Kaur, Ellen Bomasang, Jessica Cook, Christine Ozden, Carina Shweta Rolly, Nicole Ngeow, Michelle Sandall, Heather Saunders, Jane Wilkinson, Aakriti Wanchoo, Emma Robinson, Margherita Calderone, Muriel van de Bilt, Patricia Shako, Rashmi Kadian, PhD, Rikesh Patel, Satyendra Prasad and Tim Agaba Baroraho, and to our clients and donor organisations such as FCDO, EBRD, and GCF. We are grateful to our partner, Save the Children UK, for hosting the event at their fantastic office venue and for their support. Sarah Dunn Hoai B. We feel honoured to see photographs from our Abt-led Health Electrification and Telecommunications Alliance (#HETA) project in sub-Saharan Africa displayed in British Expertise International's Climate Showcase as part of London Climate Action Week.    The two images we submitted for the exhibition show a rooftop solar PV installation providing power to the Chala Health Facility in Tanzania, and two technicians setting up solar panels at another health facility in the country. Thank you to HETA partners CSSC, ENSOL, and bechtel.org.    In sub-Saharan Africa, more than 100,000 health facilities lack access to reliable electricity, threatening lives, causing equipment malfunctions, and limiting internet connectivity for critical data and digital recordkeeping. The HETA project is a USAID Global Development Alliance and Power Africa's flagship initiative to address these challenges by crowding in finance, technology and expertise. Our goal is to support 10,000 facilities with access to reliable electricity and digital connectivity powered by renewables. HETA has electrified/digitally connected 507 health facilities in Tanzania alone so far, and additional facilities are coming soon.   The photography exhibition, which showcases work in climate change mitigation and adaptation in the Global South, is open at D Contemporary at 23 Grafton Street until Friday!
