Kickstarting an exciting week with Conservation International Asia-Pacific as part of the #10ForZero #youth delegation to Timor-Leste! As we landed, we were warmly welcomed by the team, and went to our first site visit to a CI support MPA at Vatuavou. Great to be here with fellow Green Boss Heng Li Seng. Did you know that CI here supports more than 24 local marine protected areas (MPA) here in Timor-Leste? We'll be here exploring key conservation cites for Conservation International, and interact with local stakeholders and community - work that has been going on since 2009. At the same time, taking the opportunity to spend time with the One Young World community too with Dircia Sarmento Belo Thanks very much once again to the CI team for giving us #youth the opportunity to learn and grow through this exprience. Good morning from COP28 UAE at COY18UAE Follow my #COP28 journey, where I'll be spotlighting amazing individuals, initiatives and opportunities people can be part of the #sustainability journey. First up, where do #youth sit in the COP28 process? I'm representing Singapore attending the 18th Conference of Youth (COY) organized by YOUNGO (The official constituency of youth) here in the Green Zone. We started the day with opening speeches from H.E. Mariam Almheiri, H.E. Reem Al Hashimy, António Guterres - calling on the message of how young people's voices must be heard and at the table, representing the world we will inherit. I'm also excited to see the presences of youth from SIDS, ASEAN at the conference - as communities most impacted by the climate crisis - it was wonderful connect and hear our difference stories! Through the next few weeks, I want to highlight amazing work in the community - I had the pleasure to finally meet F2F Mohammed Eissa a Youth Emirati Negotiator where we discussed the importance of inclusion of youth at the table. I enjoyed catching up with old and new friends too Dircia Sarmento Belo Athena Thomas Aaron Nagai Bianca Garvin Alex Lew 劉文傑 and looking forward to seeing friends soon especially from the Y20 India 2023 & One Young World family. 🙏 Last Thursday morning we had the opportunity to attend the Launch of SGX RegCo Sustainability Report 2023. 💚The event started with an opening by Professor Tan Eng Chye - President of National University of Singapore where he shared about the good work NUS has been doing to bridge the green skills gap by offering a plethora of sustainability courses and Masters. NUS has also recently been awarded the President's Awards for the Environment'23. 🔑For the Keynote Address, DPM and Coordinating Minister of Economic Policies - Mr. Heng Swee Keat shared 3 points regarding the importance of sustainability for corporates 1. Sustainability can be a means of sharpening the competitive edge 2. Springboard for innovation 3. Nurture and retain future-ready talent 📈The research findings presented by Professor Lawrence Loh covered the areas of overall sustainability reporting performance, component disclosures, sustainability assurance, and transition plans. These are valuable insights but what stood out was how the average scores of the sustainability reports improved (~75) despite an increased number of issuers but the average score drops to about 65 when factoring in climate-related disclosures. ✅ Overall, we are on the right track and glad that there is now more emphasis on climate-related disclosures. Wrapping up an extremely exciting, and meaninful weekend at the G20 India Y20 India 2023 Youth Summit in Varanasi, the Holy City of India. The cumulation of more than 6 months of hard work, multiple discussions across more than 25 youth, and countries equally passionate about climate change. One thing that we cannot deny, climate change is a real, and cross cutting across global issues as highlighted in Y20 discussions. With many hours spent negotiating, more than 12 hours of discussions, and late night informal negotations, a consensus was arrived to on key priorities for youths which can be found here: y20india.in/ This experience was humbling, and also eye-opening to the different and diverse view across other countries. We also learnt that life is not black and white, very much like policies in tackling the climate crisis. Each nation needs to take into account its circumstances, but hopefully drive more ambitious targets going forward. I would like to send my utmost thanks and gratefulnes to the Y20 India team, Convenor Ajay Kashyap Climate Track Chair Kunal Tilak (it was an absolute honour to support drafting the communique) and the amazing climate track team for being open to Singapore's participation on such key issues, even if we may only be observers in the process. We definitely also missed our pre-summit delegates who were not able to come but contributed so much! And send my immense gratitude and gratefulness to the National Youth Council Singapore for sending me. It is truly an honour to represent Singapore, even if just a regular citizen, which will also help us accelerate our Singapore Youth engagement all the way to COP28 UAE Lastly, a shoutout to the SG delegation, Nabillah Jalal Reuben C. Shubaashini Vijayamohan Victor Zhu whomst I sat with so much comfort, found solidarity and hope despite the ups and downs of the negotiations. Singapore is truly home! I'm glad we also had a chance to showcase our amazing climate policies to the rest of the world.
