    Executive Interim Management in Finland Ten years ago, Executive Interim Management was largely an unknown concept in Finland, but since a couple of years ago, the industry is on the rise. Our colleague Niklas Björkman, Managing Partner at Nordic Interim Finland Oy, tells us his background, his view of Interim Management, and what the Finnish interim market looks like today. Niklas has a broad background in B2B and B2C in industry, management consulting, telecom and FMCG. He has himself has worked as an Interim Manager within business development, which is always about understanding how to be relevant to the customer and how to continue to be it. What does the interim market look like in Finland? “The Finnish market is a little behind Sweden. We need to keep working on educating the market about Interim Management and about how it differs from management consulting. Historically, you chose either recruitment or consulting, and an interim was hired for vacancies. Now the demand for Interim Management is starting to take off, and the companies we talk to are very positive about this solution. This also entails greater competition, but most players are locally based around Finland. The fact that we are Nordic is a big advantage and we see an increasing need from our customers for support throughout Scandinavia. Together with our owners Valtus, we collaborate cross-border all around the world, and at the moment we have several assignments in Central Europe and the USA.     Maria Khorsand turned Careium’s numbers around in just six months   When Maria Khorsand joined Careium as Executive Interim CEO in 2022, her assignment was to lead a turnaround. In just six months, Maria, together with her team, managed to drastically turn the company’s numbers around. Q4 2022 exceeded expectations and the stock raised over 50%.   Turning around a company’s sensitive financial numbers usually involves introducing an rational cost-saving package while simultaneously growing the business in a distressed situation, which requires strong leadership and a solid team.   “It’s important that everyone is on board and understands that together we create change and stability and that all individuals are important. The management team worked out a cost-saving package that we implemented immediately while we grew our business significantly. I had many one-to-one conversations to drive us forward with collective power, where we are headed. It’s impossible to succeed with a major change if you don’t communicate transparently, clearly, and regularly. Since Careium is listed on the stock exchange, I couldn’t tell everything, but it was important that everyone felt safe and proud”, says Maria.     Trivia: At Ericsson, Maria was CEO of their Bluetooth company (Ericsson Technology Licensing), which was the first in the world to develop Bluetooth technology for wirelessly connecting different digital devices. Together with one of their customers, a computer manufacturer, the new technology was to be marketed. Maria had previously given a book to the customer, namely “Röde Orm” by Frans G Bengtsson. In the book, there is a character named Harald Bluetooth – which inspired the technology we now call Bluetooth.   #interimmanagement #turnaround #changeleadership

By bringing in an Interim Manager, they got an experienced extra resource who could provide an objective view of the situation without having to consider internal politics and who could quickly get up to speed without taking too much energy from the rest of the organization. This allowed me to question things in a different way than if I was permanently employed and quickly get a good picture of the current situation and identify areas that needed attention.     Networking is about helping others Networking is not just gaining job leads or opportunities for their business to grow. The most effective networkers prioritize helping others, developing genuine relationships and aim to give more than they receive. You need to be a good listener to find out people’s needs and how to help them. To be a successful networker, you need to know what strengths, skills, and connections that you can share, decide what you want to discuss, and how you can assist others. Willingness to team up and help others is important as it builds trust and helps establish a strong relationship. Sharing your knowledge is an attractive trait that people will remember about you. Find the value in every person you talk to, ask questions, and show interest in their thoughts and ideas. Do not underestimate persons based on their titles, as everyone may have valuable connections or knowledge that may be of importance to you. If you commit to contact or introduce someone, make the effort to do so and show your willingness to assist in any way possible. Remember to maintain your network, set aside time to reconnect with your contacts.     "Identifying needs and seeing the results of the changes is the best part of Executive Interim Management" Fredrik Hultner started his career as a software developer, but since the 90s, he has travelled the world to build sales and marketing organizations, among others within the Kinnevik sphere. Can you tell us about one of your latest interim assignment? "It was a Swedish software company where my assignment was to manage the daily operations for the sales and marketing team and act as a support to the CEO. Among other things, I established a sales methodology, developed new positioning, new pricing models, and new customer offerings together with the CEO and owners, as well as negotiated new agreements with current customers and targeted defined customers for new sales.
