Manager Pitfall #17 - My territories are full! One of the first things I ask a new manager when I start working with them is to walk me through their recruiting activities. Far too often I hear "My team is full... I don't need to recruit". This couldn't be further from the truth ! As a manager you have 3 basic functions: Hire the right people, Develop your talent and Promote your talent - That's it! Recruiting is the start of the process, and should be part of a managers monthly governance (like one on ones or forecast meetings). Turnover, unfortunately, is an inevitability NOT a possibility. It represents a significant problem and the effort to recruit along with the lost productivity of "opens" can be a staggering hidden cost. Don't stop recruiting. Proactive recruiting provides 5 major benefits: 1) It is the best way to see if you should upgrade your talent 2) It provides you insights to the market and your competitors by asking questions 3) It sends a positive signal to the market that you are looking to grow 4) It keeps the bullpen honest by signalling they are replaceable 5) You will know what a star player looks like when you find them I would suggest setting a target of 2 interviews a month even when your team is full.
