Hugh Gong graduated in Mechanical Engineering from Dong Hua University (Shanghai, China) in 1984 and obtained his PhD from the University of Manchester in 1989. He then spent three years managing the Coats Viyella - Marks and Spencer Fabric Centre before taking up a lectureship in the Department of Textiles, UMIST in 1992. His main research interests are in fibrous structures such as yarns, nonwovens, nanofibres and textile composites, and in the performance measurement, modelling and recycling of flexible materials. He served as the Director of Postgraduate Studies in the School and Chair of the Postgraduate Degrees Panel in the Faculty of EPS.

Externally, he has held visiting professorships in Shinshu University (Japan), Suzhou University (China), Zhongyuan University of Technology (China), and Jiangnan University (China). He has acted as external examiner of research degrees in many universities both in the UK and internationally. He is a regular reviewer for many international journals and research grant reviewer for research councils in the UK and overseas. H is Editorial Member of the International Journal of Materials Engineering and Editor of Cogent Engineering. He has provided technical consultancy for many international organisations such as the Gatsby Trust, Proctor and Gamble, Marks and Spencer, and Unilever. He has supervised more than 40 PhD students. He also served on the BSI Committee TCI/024.
