Exciting update for Project LOTUS! Together with NYK Line and VPS, we witnessed the first bunkering of B24 biofuel blend (FAME + VLSFO) on NYK’s short-sea vehicle carrier as part of Project LOTUS. Project LOTUS is a six-month long project to trial the continuous use of biofuels to study its impact on engine performance and onboard systems operations. The project team worked closely with the vessel crew onboard to ensure that Project LOTUS’s plan was executed according to our specifications, ensuring that the data collected is robust and accurate, ultimately leading to meaningful results and insights. The pilot will involve monitoring and analysing impact on: ➡ Fuel quality: Quality of the biofuel blend will be systematically tracked and monitored throughout the supply chain, from bunkering to onboard consumption under operating conditions. ➡ Fuel delivery system: Physical inspection of the fuel delivery system and purifiers will be conducted to monitor for potential seal leakages, corrosion, clogging etc. ➡ Engine performance: Working with engine OEMs, detailed inspections will be conducted on engine components before and after switching to biofuels along with a lubricating oil analysis to assess its efficacy in protecting the engine’s moving parts from wear and tear. We're excited to share the insights and findings upon the project's completion. Special thanks to Captain Radha Krishnan, Chief Engineer Mr. V.M Cuong and the crew for executing the activities required for the trials. We have seen first-hand the care in which they carried out the activities yesterday. Thank you for hosting our team onboard the vessel! 🙌 Curious about our Project LOTUS? We’re happy to having worked closely with the Norwegian Shipowners' Association (Norges Rederiforbund) and Offshore Norge in preparing the annual update on the offshore industry’s path towards the national emission targets. VPS has contributed with insight from the Maress database, in combination with our advisory services. This year’s KonKraft report has a new level of details in the chapter on Maritime Operations, providing deep insight into savings seen in various parts of the vessel operations and across vessel segments +++. The numbers clearly show that the emission intensity from maritime ops is dropping, but at the same time the activity is increasing.   At the launch of the report the Norwegian Ministry of Energy Terje Aasland said that the targets are indeed demanding, but collaboration is key to reaching them. Further, he stated that the contribution from the report is important in the Government’s further climate policy development. Viggo Bondi, acting CEO in NSA commented that while initiatives like shorepower and energy efficiency are showing clear results, there is a big part of the transition that remains to reach the targets.   For vessel owners ++, the part of the report highlighting savings potential from battery solutions and shorepower may be especially interesting. We also encourage everyone to take a look at the concrete industry examples (pp56 & 57) on how digital solutions and new technologies can contribute to emission reductions (including a reference to the #MaressSummerCampaign). https://lnkd.in/dq39QU4Z   📸 Captured at the report launch: Emilian Buksak, VPS Senior Decarbonisation Advisor, alongside Anne Jorunn Møkster, leader of the Offshore group in the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association.   #ClimateAction #Sustainability #OilAndGas #Norway #KonKraft #EnergyEfficiency #MaritimeInnovation #DataDriven Simon Johannsson | Trym Edvardsson

VPS works with GCMD to provide industry leadership in the understanding of Biofuels Degradation VPS is very proud to have supported the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) in this vitally important work of understanding the nature of Biofuels Degradation said Capt. Rahul Choudhuri, President Strategic Partnerships. This collaborative relationship combining expert minds, has been part of a series of end-to-end supply chains trials, across different geographical locations, over an extensive period of two years. These supply chain trials involved real-world conditions where professional surveyors were deployed to correctly take samples & measurements. This was followed by testing of the neat FAME & the biofuel blends in entirety – so that every aspect of the Biofuels was evaluated for accuracy & trends. This Biofuels study shows levels of fuel degradation in a real-world environment. Whereas the trials indicated no degradation of the Biofuels over the nominated transportation section & supply to the vessel. Stakeholders will nevertheless need to exercise close quality control of the Biofuels in the future - in order to not only understand the different parameters of the Biofuel, but to also be best prepared for their effective fuel management onboard the vessels. Click below to get a copy of this important Biofuels Degradation Study.

📢 We are pleased to announce the release of our latest report, “Tracking the Propensity of Biofuels Degradation Across the Maritime Supply Chain”. This report aims to shed light on our findings from tracking the quality of FAME and FAME blends as they make their way through the supply chains and on consumption onboard vessels. 🚢 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐟𝐮𝐞𝐥𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 Biofuels are increasingly adopted as a drop-in fuel for the shipping industry to reduce GHG emissions. Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME), a readily available biofuel, is gaining attention as an immediate solution to comply with EU and IMO regulations. 🌿 𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐟𝐮𝐞𝐥𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐧 Unlike conventional marine fuels, FAME-based biofuels can be unstable since its natural oils and fats can slowly oxidise when exposed to atmospheric oxygen. When oxidation happens, FAME can degrade to produce by-products, like peroxides, alcohols, and sludge, all of which can impact engine life and performance. Degradation can also be further accelerated by exposure to water, impurities, contaminants, light, and heat. This raises a crucial question: 𝐃𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐅𝐀𝐌𝐄 𝐝𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬, 𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐰𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐢s𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧? 🤔 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 Encouragingly, our end-to-end supply chain trials detected no significant degradation of FAME under commercial operations conditions. ✅ These findings offer strong support for FAME use in the marine fuels supply chain. Read our report to understand how the team traced the properties of FAME and FAME blends, and tracked the parameters of FAME quality, namely acid value, viscosity, FAME content, energy content, and microbial contamination, of samples at different points along the supply chain to come to this conclusion. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬 • Understanding the propensity of degradation of FAME • Tracing FAME quality in GCMD’s end-to-end supply chains • Understanding the current ISO specifications for FAME quality requirements • Contextualising GCMD’s findings per ISO specifications 𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐬 The report is co-authored by Dr. Prapisala Thepsithar, Director of Projects, and Dr Sanjay C Kuttan, Chief Strategy Officer, at GCMD. It has also been reviewed by industry leaders: Dr. Malcolm Cooper, CEO of VPS, Captain Rahul Choudhuri, President, Strategic Partnerships, VPS, and Ms. Monique Vermeire, Fuels Technologist at Chevron. 📄 Visit our website to download our report here: https://lnkd.in/gg3Bxt5r
