NYK Holds Annual NYK Fleet Safety Management Meeting in Tokyo, Imabari, and online    --NYK fleet safety management meeting held in Imabari City--  In July, NYK held the annual NYK fleet safety management meeting with domestic and overseas shipowners and ship management companies to share information on NYK's safety initiatives and past accidents to foster and improve safety awareness.      These meetings are part of our annual "Remember Naka-no-Se" safety campaign, which runs for two months beginning July 1. Based on the lessons learned from the Diamond Grace oil spill in Tokyo Bay in July 1997, we are working to foster and improve awareness of safe operations among all officers, employees, and partners.      The three-day event combined face-to-face meetings at the Tokyo head office and in Imabari City with a hybrid online format for a total of three days of meetings. On July 11, a Vessel Tour Drill Exercise was conducted on NYK’s LNG-fueled car carrier Sakura Leader at Port Newark in the U.S. as part of a disaster-prevention training program. Since 2020, more than 10 such training sessions have been conducted on board a vessel in cooperation with the U.S. Coast Guard and fire departments across the U.S. for local emergency-response training.   Approximately 50 participants conducted the exercise in cooperation with the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness, U.S. Coast Guard, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and police and fire departments.   Participants visualized practical scenarios in detail, focusing on protecting lives, extinguishing fires, and collaborating with the vessel, demonstrating seriousness and dedication.   Feedback from participating organizations indicated that the exercise was highly educational and provided a clear understanding of the procedures. The participants favored conducting such drills regularly and involving as many firefighters and stakeholders as possible.   Moving forward, we will continue to collaborate with local organizations to ensure close coordination during times of disaster.   7月11日、米国ポートニューアークにて、LNG燃料自動車専用船”Sakura Leader”で防災訓練を目的とした船内見学演習が実施されました。2020年より、現地での緊急対応訓練を目的とし、全米各地の米国沿岸警備隊や消防署と協力し、10回以上の訓練セッションが本船上で行われています。   約50名の参加者が、ニュージャージー州国土安全保障及び準備局、アメリカ沿岸警備隊、ニューヨーク・ニュージャージー港湾局、 消防署、警察署と協力して演習を実施しました。   参加者は、実践的なシナリオを詳細にイメージし、どのように命を守り、消火し、本船と協力するかに焦点を当て、真剣さと献身さを示しました。   参加した組織からのフィードバックによると、この演習は非常に教育的で、かつ手順を明確に理解するのに役立ちました。また、今後も定期的に実施し、出来るだけ多くの消防員や関係者を参加させることも参加者からの賛同を得ました。今後も、災害時における緊密な連携を確保するため、地域の組織と協力を継続していきます。

NYK Donates 1 million yen to Daisen City in Akita Prefecture for Salmon Hatchery Reconstruction Project    As part of a comprehensive agreement with Akita Prefecture, NYK will donate 1 million yen to a project to reconstruct a fisheries hatchery run by Daisen City, where salmon have been hatched and released for over 100 years.      Currently, there are five salmon hatcheries in Akita Prefecture releasing 20 million fry each year to support the prefecture's coastal fisheries. The Daisen City hatchery has a 129-year history and is the only hatchery in the inland area, releasing 2.4 million fry every year.      To secure sustainable salmon resources in Japan, it is necessary to improve the return rate of salmon by raising large fry that can adapt to the recent changes in ocean currents and to improve the function of the current aging hatchery.      Through this donation to the hatchery renovation project, which includes securing abundant groundwater necessary for fry rearing, installing a flotation tank that enables integrated rearing from eggs to fry, and developing in-house power generation facilities, NYK will contribute to the conservation of Japan's fishery resources, harmonious coexistence between humans and nature, and the inheritance of a traditional salmon culture and the revitalization of the region.    https://lnkd.in/e3jZVHe3    秋田県大仙市のサケふ化場改築事業に100万円寄付    当社は秋田県との包括協定の一環で(注)100年以上前からサケのふ化放流を行ってきた秋田県大仙市営水産ふ化場の改築事業に100万円を寄付することを決定し、7月22日に大仙市役所で行われた贈呈式に当社秋田支店長の下村達也が出席しました。    現在、秋田県内には5か所のサケのふ化場があり、毎年2000万尾の稚魚を放流し、県沿岸の漁業を支えています。中でも大仙市のふ化放流事業は129年の歴史を有し、内陸唯一のふ化場として例年240万尾の稚魚を放流しています。日本の持続的なサケ資源確保のためには昨今の海流変化に適応できる大型稚魚に育成し、回帰率向上を図っていく必要があり、老朽化した現ふ化場の機能向上が求められています。    当社は、稚魚育成に必要となる豊富な地下水の確保、卵から稚魚まで一貫飼育可能な浮上槽の導入、自家発電施設の整備等のふ化場改築事業への寄付を通じて、日本の水産資源保全、人間と自然の調和のとれた共生、伝統的サケ文化の継承と地域活性化の実現に貢献します。    https://lnkd.in/emESAbmx 

NYK Bulkship (Atlantic) Installs NYK Group’s First Wind-Assisted Ship-Propulsion Units    --Reducing GHGs Through Sustainable Wind Propulsion--  On July 8, NYK Bulkship (Atlantic) N.V. (Head Office: Antwerp, Belgium; “NBAtlantic”), an NYK Group company, installed two wind-assisted ship-propulsion units on the bulk carrier NBA Magritte at the port of Rotterdam, the Netherlands, which is engaged in a long-term charter contract with Cargill (USA). This is the first time a unit of this type has been installed on an NYK Group vessel.    Sitting on a 20-foot-long (approximately 6-meter) flat rack container with no walls, VentoFoil has a 16-meter vertical wing that acts as suction sail* which expects about 5 times as much force compared to no-suction versions.    Features of VentoFoil  ・VentoFoil creates propulsion with the pressure difference on both sides of the wing and is expected to help reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions during vessel navigation.  ・It takes in wind through its suction port and obtains greater propulsion by amplifying the pressure difference.  ・The system can be easily activated and deactivated through a touch panel installed on the bridge, enabling operation without increasing the crew’s workload.  ・It is smaller than similar wind equipment, making it easy to install and relocate.  ・It can be folded in about 5 to 6 minutes, keeping it out of the way of cargo handling. NYK to Invest in Urchinomics Group, a Sea Urchin Farming Business    --Aiming to contribute to Kelpbed restoration and a blue-carbon business--  On July 24, NYK and Verdant Bloom Ltd., the parent company of Urchinomics Group, signed a share purchase agreement for NYK to invest in Verdant Bloom Ltd.  Both parties aim to contribute to the prevention of global warming by restoring kelp forests to sequester CO2.    Current Issue  Kelp forests, inhabiting seabeds, support marine biodiversity by providing a habitat for small fish and other aquatic life. These underwater forests are attracting attention as a "blue carbon", because they absorb and store CO2 from the atmosphere through photosynthesis. However, in recent years overabundance of sea urchins, eating up kelp forests, has become a serious problem worldwide. Without a food source, the proliferating sea urchins then starve and become unsuitable for food because they contain little or no “uni,” the delicate meat inside an urchin's spiny shell, thus making them undesirable. Purpose of NYK Investment  As a comprehensive logistics company centered on marine transportation, the NYK Group has positioned "giving back to the oceans" through marine environmental conservation as one of the company’s key themes. NYK aims to preserve marine biodiversity by regenerating seaweed beds and contributing to the ocean's decarbonization. The company will accumulate knowledge to establish an evaluation method for blue carbon, which contributes to carbon removal and is expected to be instrumental. We are delighted to report that a consortium comprising Keppel Ltd., Advario and NYK has been shortlisted by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the Energy Market Authority of Singapore (EMA) for the next phase. We deeply appreciate Keppel, for having us in this consortium to develop ammonia bunkering infrastructure.   We are confident that our rich expertise and experience in LNG bunkering, ammonia marine transportation, and ammonia-fueled vessel development will materialize safe ammonia bunkering in Singapore. NYK and Whisky Considered one of the top five whiskies in the world along with those from Scotland, Ireland, the U.S., and Canada, Japanese whisky is exported to many countries including China, the U.S., and France, and the export volume is increasing yearly. Ocean Network Express, a container-shipping affiliate of NYK, also transports whisky. The history of Japanese whisky began in 1923, when construction began on the Yamazaki Distillery, the first domestically produced whisky distillery in Japan. Last year thus marked the 100th anniversary of Japanese whisky, which is widely loved in Japan and abroad.
