Founder & CEO @ Visual Contracts | Legal Design Thinking | Legal Tech | (she/her)

Dear network, I am taking a break from Visual Contracts. Temporary or indefinite, we shall see. Over the past 2 years I have heavily invested in getting the software off the ground, getting nominated and winning awards (winning the Hague subsidy for innovative collaborations with LISI, We Are Stewards, TU Delft and Erasmus School of Law/ DLDL, being in the finals of the CSU Innovators last year, winning the Access to Justice Award of Pels Rijcken last year, selected to pitch at TLTF Summit in Miami last year, launching the Dutch Legal Design Lab in Delft last April – including a mock trial with one of our visual contracts (they hold up in court!) and currently in the Legal Tech Accelerator of Slaughter and May GenAI edition. Also last year among the last 9 (in the top 2%) of a renowned accelerator but didn’t got selected and most recently in the finals for a grant I am not allowed to name (again in the top 5% but not selected). Why didn’t we succeed in closing the deal? I have many different reflections on this and I think it has to do with a lot of factors. Nevertheless, for now, it seems I’ve just been working too much against the current. All in all, it just was not sufficient to keep both myself and my team going to get it off the ground. Despite the potential I (and many!) still see it has. I want to thank everyone who has collaborated with Visual Contracts for their belief in our mission of making the law more accessible and contract design easier at scale. You made all of that we did achieve possible! And now: I am going back to my roots: design/UX research and prototyping. Which is what I love to do most. I am available for freelance work on: -             Design/UX research -             Prototyping -             UX design For the rest I’m offering: -             A love for building products and services with impact and purpose, contributing to social and just prosperity (UX/UI, visual and service design) -             An interest and love for tech, innovation and learning new things -             9+ years of experience in legal innovation -             A hang for startups and innovations -             An interest in Arduino/Raspberry Pi and coding (beginner skills) You can find my work on visualcontracts.eu and liekebeelen.nl (I’m working on an update of my portfolio). But moreover: plan a call so that I can give you an insight on the projects I lead and conducted in the past years through Visual Contracts. I can start on the 1st of August. Let me know if you have any projects in mind where you could use an innovative and creative mind. Thanks! #designresearch #uxresearch #prototyping #uxdesign #startups

We will be giving a #legaldesign workshop together with Aclara Legal Design and Kim Raad on 17 of April during the 'Connecting law, design & tech' event of Dutch Legal Design Lab to design just societies. There will be a full program with a mock trial conducted by Pels Rijcken and Dory Reiling with one of the visual contracts that we designed for one of our clients. We're aiming to discover if and how a court trial and verdict runs differently if there is a visual contract involved. Next to that there are multiple parallel workshops: 🎙 1️⃣ 𝐄𝐔 𝐀𝐈 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 by: Abel Hoogeveen - ICTRecht 🎙2️⃣ 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 by: Sofie-Amalie Torp Dideriksen - PhD candidate AI future Labs Delft University of Technology 🎙3️⃣ 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐧𝐞𝐠𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 & 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐲 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐥? by: Mirjam Ros - Sparkling Eyes Innovation 🎙4️⃣ 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 by: Raluca R., Maurits Bos, Marieke Pols, Camiel Corsten - Legal Innovation for Sustainable Investments (LISI) 🎙5️⃣ 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 by: Peter Lloyd, Fernando Secomandi, Cees Zweistra, Ilona van Opdorp - Delft University of Technology & Erasmus School of Law 🎙6️⃣ 𝐌𝐞, 𝐦𝐲𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 & 𝐥𝐚𝐰: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐞 & 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐰 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 by: Kim Raad - Stibbe Last but not least we are presenting the results of the subsidy project 'Enabling design driven impact deals' where we created a visual impact termsheet, that we also incorporate in our 'Canva for contracts' software. Tomorrow we're organizing our next Visual Contracts' Monthly Meetup again on 26th March from 12:00-13:00 CET. This month's topic is around the Innovation Toolbox: how to manage innovation and IP from a legal design perspective. Since no one flies solo these days, collaboration and co-innovation is essential for success. But many of you know how long it can take to sign even a simple confidentiality agreement or as a follow-up, a collaboration contract. Too often the focus is on legal details, standardized perfectionism and completeness that do not take into account your context with respect to the next business model, a short time to market, negotiating IP fairly and with business sense and making the joint business proposition a success. Mirjam Ros and Lieke are convinced this can and should be changed for the good by designing, co-creating and implementing an Innovation Toolbox. Such a toolbox could enhance innovation speed to get your sustainable solutions asap on the market and with contracts much simpler, easier to understand which will lead to shorter throughput times and better results. Mirjam Ros is a business strategist who believes in simplifying the complex and in making ‘common sense more common’. She is driven by a people and user-centric approach to Innovation, Collaboration & Intellectual Property, Commercial Contracting, Business Strategy and Organizational Development. She holds a Master’s degree in Business Law and a Master’s degree in Public Administration & Policy, and has twenty five years of experience in the aerospace, oil & gas industries and in R&D. In 2019, she wrote the Innovation Matrix co-authored with Deepika Jeyakodi (https://lnkd.in/e8Ehf5mz). She works as an independent innovation & strategy consultant and coach and her customers work at start and scale-ups, SME’s, corporates, accelerators and universities, institutes and governmental organisations. Worried about oversimplification when making your contracts more user friendly? First of all, the research below shows the case for really letting go of writing in too much legal jargon. You can find this paper here: https://lnkd.in/epF_iZ-B Also, from all the contracts that have been designed in the global legal design community so far there are no court cases known to date. After all you also have contract freedom and the judges I spoke with are all in favor for contracts that are easier to read because it saves them time as well. Plus, we will only leave out content if it is not covering the core of the legal concept and what you’d want to achieve with the contract. So do not worry and start your contract design journey now. Take a first step with our free 20 min training here: https://lnkd.in/epHiCxCz #legaldesign #contractdesign #oversimplification #visualcontracts

Which clause style do you prefer? Did you already share yours? We now have 54 completed surveys and 116 votes, from across the world. The survey runs until March 21st. And - as many have shared, it is difficult to choose, that's also why you have the opportunity to explain your choice, which we will analyze after the survey closed. We will continue to do more surveys after this very first one to further make the research better and collect more insights on how to design better contracts. Share your thoughts here until this Thursday: understandablelaw.com #legaldesign #contractdesign #bettercontracts #accesstolaw #legaltech
