98% #RenewableEnergy in North East Brazil! The Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy has announced that 93.1% of Brazil's power generation of 2023 came from renewable sources, mainly hydro, solar PV and wind power. In the North East of Brazil that share of renewable power generation goes up to even 98% (!). In the Netherlands, we are now at a 48% share of renewable power generation. The three images below show how Brazil is able to reach these incredible numbers: 1. Lots of wind and solar: the North East of Brazil has both very high wind speeds and a high solar intensity - making it optimal for producing electricity from wind and solar power. 2. Little intermittency: there are little fluctuations in how much sun and wind is available each hour, day or season. Especially the solar energy (dotted line) is very constant over the year, but also the wind profile (line-dot combination) is relatively constant and highly predictable. This is because the North East of Brazil is located close to the Equator. Unlike the Netherlands - where the weather is very unpredictable - the wind and solar availability in the North East of Brazil are extremely stable. 3. One big electricity grid: almost the whole of Brazil is connected by one big electricity grid. So when there is a day of little sun in the South, that can be compensated by solar energy from the North. To compare, Brazil is as big as Europe. Just imagine the rainy days in the Netherlands being compensated by the sun from the South of Portugal - at least on the electricity grid. This extremely high share of renewable electricity is also optimal for producing #RenewableHydrogen. Brazil is seen as potentially the most optimal country for renewable hydrogen production worldwide - and a lot of research and development around hydrogen is taking place in Brazil. Which is why we are organising a #HydrogenInnovationMission from October 7-11! Registration is still open for 5 days through: https://lnkd.in/en6kmtE4 Robert Thijssen Jens K. Yesterday, groups of students finalizing their studies from Erasmus University Rotterdam, UvA and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) visited the residence of the Consul General of The Netherlands in São Paulo. The students were doing international research projects in Brazil on innovative topics such as green methanol, sustainable mining and raw materials for the food industry. After an introduction by our consul Wieneke Vullings about the work of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Brazil and a word from our counsellor for science, technology and innovation Robert Thijssen about the Innovatie Attaché Netwerk Brazilië / Netherlands Innovation Attaché Network Brazil . The students had the opportunity to present their research projects. Afterwards there was the opportunity to discuss their research with each other, with experts from the consulate, and with participants of the Orange Academy organized by Dutcham - Dutch Brazilian Chamber of Commerce. We wish the students a successful research project and a pleasant stay in Brazil. Daniël Burgers Jens K. Tijmen Steensma Felipe Galoro Peggy De Rop Peter de Bruijn

"No more green, grey or pink hydrogen" That was the main message at International Hydrogen Connection in Rio de Janeiro organized by Firjan, ABNT - Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas and ABH2 - Associação Brasileira do Hidrogênio. Green, grey and pink hydrogen result in the same molecule: H2. Regardless of whether it was produced using renewable, fossil or nuclear energy. Instead of classifying hydrogen by means of production, the environmental impact should be expressed in emissions, land use, water use and other polluting effects. Using those numbers instead of the current colours, will facilitate international hydrogen trade because the environmental impact of hydrogen will be classified the same way all over the world. Both Brazil and the Netherlands are innovating heavily in the field of hydrogen. Dutch Consul-General Sonja Kuip spoke in a panel discussion about the potential of Brazil and the Netherlands working together in this hydrogen transition. The Netherlands can function as the gateway to Europe with the ports of Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Groningen and the North Sea Port - but we can also work together as research and development partners. To accelerate this R&D collaboration, we will put the most innovative Brazilian research institutes and companies together with their Dutch counterparts during our hydrogen innovation mission of 7-11 October. Last Friday, Luane Lemos and Luewton Lemos F Agostinho visited the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in São Paulo to meet with the Innovatie Attaché Netwerk Brazilië / Netherlands Innovation Attaché Network Brazil team. Representing the Aliança Brasileira para Descarbonização dos Portos, Luane explained how this alliance of #ports and organizations aims to stimulate the green development of the Brazilian port sector through cooperation and sharing of experiences. The alliance kicked-off with the official signing during the Intermodal fair, where they started with 35 members. Since then, there are now around 50 members of the alliance in Brazil, and this number keeps growing. The topic of #decarbonization of ports was broadly discussed, specifically how the development of new #hydrogen #technologies can contribute to this. Within the alliance, there are several working groups, of which the #renewable #energy working group is led by the Port of Pecém. Of particular interest is our hydrogen #innovation mission, which aims to connect Dutch innovators with their Brazilian counterparts. Part of the program will be to connect with the ports to foster innovation of hydrogen technologies in the Northeast of Brazil. Thanks to Luewton Lemos F Agostinho for setting up this fruitful conversation. Let us continue to seek potential innovation collaborations between Dutch and Brazilian parties. Recently, the Eureka Network #Globalstars call with #Brazil closed. Globalstars is a R&D collaboration instrument of Eureka to realize mid-TRL collaborative projects between innovative companies of Eureka member states together with those of a non-member country. The Netherlands was one of the Eureka member countries participating in this call through the Netherlands Enterprise Agency . Even though we still need to wait for the evaluation process to know which projects will be financed, the interest of companies to collaborate in innovative projects with Brazilian partners has never been bigger with a grand total of 61 projects being submitted of which 14 from the Netherlands. The R&D projects submitted by Dutch companies in partnership with a Brazilian partner are in areas such as #agriculture, #healthcare, #logistics and #hightech. We look forward to the ranking and to the projects that will be granted later this year. Robert Thijssen Daniël Burgers Tijmen Steensma Ernst-Jan Bakker Achim Eberspächer Arnold Meijer

On behalf of Ministerie van Economische Zaken en Klimaat, Robert Thijssen represented the Netherlands during G20 Brasil 2024 and Clean Energy Ministerial and Mission Innovation energy transition side events in Belo Horizonte 2 weeks ago. These events were aimed at both CEM/MI delegates as well as specialists, scientists and entrepreneurs in the field of bio-energy. Discussions were held on the sustainability of biomass for bio-energy and how 1. When is biomass produced sustainably? And 2. How to measure and/or model this e.g. with Life Cycle Analysis? Brazil is president of the G20 this year and will also host the CEM/MI ministerial back-to-back with the G20 Energy Transition Ministerial in Foz do Iguaçu on 3 and 4 October. To prepare for these ministerials Brazil together the CEM and MI secretariats organized these events aimed to gather insights and policy recommendations for the ministers who will be in Foz do Iguaçu in October. Brazil is putting a lot of attention to biofuels, future fuels like SAF for aviation and shipping fuels, but also biochemicals and biorefinery for which it has unique potential. The Netherlands through ChemistryNL BioBased Circular and Ministerie van Economische Zaken en Klimaat is building a strategic #innovation agenda with Brazil on these topics, which bring opportunities for knowledge institutes and private companies alike. Even though the Netherlands will not be present at the G20 ministerial but as member of CEM/MI we will be in Foz and be part of these important discussions!
