Yesterday was a day of celebration for Technoport's Newcomers' lunches!🍾 It's already been one year since we launched this event, which brings our community together every month to exchange, get to know each other, create synergies, and have a good time together. We had the opportunity to take stock of this year and what's in store for next year, to introduce the Technoport team in a slightly more personal way, and to present one of our latest partners, dealsup.io, and its offer to increase sales for our startups. Why my first sales hire as a founder would most likely not be a C-Level. I see this mistake being repeated again and again with early startups and founders. The idea of hiring a very senior sales person early on, especially before a startup has established product market fit. 9/10 times this just does not work. Why it happens: 1️⃣ Most first time founders do not have extensive sales experience so hiring someone who has a lot of it seems like the right move. Less risky! 2️⃣ They believe what they need is at this stage is a sophisticated sales strategy and a thought out sales process. Maybe they read a book about it, or interviewed people who told them so. 3️⃣ They feel this will speed up one of the most challenging phases of any startup... validating product market fit. Why this does not work: (in the majority of cases) 1️⃣ Most successful sellers or C-level people do not drop the gun and move to an early startup that has not yet established product market fit, or has solid growth plans. It is a risky move. 2️⃣ Finding candidates that possess both of the following qualities is really hard: 1. Willingness and drive to grind and go back to selling without the resources they were previously used to and 2. Good at building go to market strategies. I call these candidates "unicorns". 3️⃣ Experienced reps, or C-level people come with their own biases, experiences and views of how things should be done. While this can be helpful later on, it can delay things at the early stages and deviate you from your number 1 priority. Sign enough clients to validate product market fit. 4️⃣ They are expensive! It is rare that at this point they can sell enough to cover their own costs. If you have reached the point where you need to hire someone, you may consider less experienced sellers, or sellers who have few years of experience and are willing to learn from you.
