Biography[edit]
Rekkles began his esports career in 2012 and despite short stints with other teams, he has been with Fnatic for the majority of his career to date - 8 years. With this organization he also achieved the greatest successes. The best year was undoubtedly 2018, where with Fnatic he won both the spring and summer splits, played in the semifinals of the Mid-Season Invitational 2018 and became runner-up of the World Championship 2018, losing in the grand final to Invictus Gaming. He played almost 600 games for Fnatic and won the LEC a total of 4 times, he also played in 7 international S-Tier tournaments (6 World Championships and 1 Mid-Season Invitational)
After such a long time in Fnatic and the expiration of his contract in 2020, Rekkles joined G2 Esports. He spent 1 year there, placing 3rd in the 2021 Spring Split and 4th in the 2021 Summer Split, respectively. In both splits he was placed on the 1st All-Pro Team roster, also winning the MVP award in the spring split. On November 16th 2021, Rekkles began a new chapter in his career and joined Karmine Corp. During his first split in LFL they finished 3rd, but Karmine Corp went on to win the EU Masters 2022 Spring tournament. In the summer split the results were no longer so satisfactory. They finished 6th in the LFL and failed to qualify for the EU Masters 2022 Summer.
Rekkles and Karmine Corp's plan was to play together in the LEC in 2023, but the team failed to buy a slot. So Rekkles started looking for options in other teams playing in the LEC.
A Year In G2 (2021)[edit]
After having parted ways with Fnatic, it was announced that Rekkles was acquired by G2 Esports for the 2021 season on November 20th. Here he replaced Luka "Perkz" Perković in the botlane. [1] With this move Rekkles set his goal of winning worlds, which with G2 looked like a possbility. The organization had dominated the two competitive years in the LEC, finishing 1st throughout 2019 and 2022,won MSI in 2019 alongside their second place at Worlds that year, followed by their 3-4th place finish in 2020.
Rekkles and the team had succesfull start to the 2021 Spring Split, finishing the regular season in first, tied with Rogue on a 14-4 record. However in the Playoffs things turned south, as G2 was beaten by MAD Lions in the Upper Finals, and proceeded to lose to Rogue in the Loser's Finals. And thus they had to miss out on MSI.
Come the following Summer Split G2 again seemed to have a good regular season, this time finishing in second overall. But again at the Playoffs the team faltered, as they lost their first series to MAD Lions again, and were later knocked out by Rekkles' old team Fnatic.
Following the 2021 LEC season, Rekkles was benched by G2. Following that decision Rekkles was also not given the opportunity to play as a substitute for the team, nor have any contention for the starting spot, which forced him to look for other teams. In addition to this, Rekkles faced the issue that if he was benched, he would earn only six percent of his salary from the organization, which was stated in the contract he had signed. While looking for other teams, he faced another issue that the buyout from G2 was set at a high price, which initially was €1,5 million euros according to the CEO Carlos “ocelote” Rodríguez Santiago. [2][3] This price led to multiple options in the LEC falling through. After other LEC teams had already signed other players for their roster, G2 lowered the buyout, which was still substantial. This however was enough for Karmine Corp, who decided to pick up Rekkles for the 2022 season in the LFL. [4]
Returning to Fnatic (2023)[edit]
On 15 December 2022, he officially reached an agreement with Fnatic and once again returned to his home organisation.
On April 28th after the Spring Split, Rekkles announced that he would officially change the role he was playing in game from AD Carry/Botlaner to Support. Because of this decision, Fnatic came to a mutual decision with Rekkles to not field him on the starting roster for the Summer Split, and instead would look to sign a new player in the AD Carry role. [5][6] In a later interview with Caedrel he explained how he had used the time during Summer to practice in his new role and look for new opportunities with other teams. [7]
"I am rerolling to support. I know it sounds really crazy, it might be. But I've had a feeling for a while now, and I guess this year kind of confirmed it, I'm a really good AD Carry I think, but I've reached a point where I'm just treading water. I don't know if that's only a Swedish saying, but basically what it means that you try really hard, but you're not getting anywhere. And that for me is AD Carry. I've done it for twelve years and I'm kind of stuck in the same place. So I think the best course of action is to revamp myself, to try something new and I really believe I'm able to pull this."Martin "Rekkles" Larsson ([5])
A Move to Korea (2024)[edit]
Ahead of the 2024 Season, it was announced on December 11th 2023, that Rekkles had officially joined the T1 Esports Academy team as their starting support. This marked Rekkles' first move outside of Europe as he would play in the LCK's Challenger League in Korea. The transfer brought much attention from fans, as in his debut game against Freecs Challengers, the viewership record for the Challenger League was smashed, peaking at a 159,000 viewers. Far surpassing the previous 38,000. In addition, the venue was also sold out. [8]
