Unicorns of Love is a German esports organization. They currently participate in the LCL, but were previously active in the EU LCS before leaving League of Legends for a short period of time in 2019.

History[edit]

European Team[edit]

The Unicorns of Love made their debut in the first FACEIT Challenger Invitational, with a roster of Vizicsacsi, Sheepy, Xodiaz, Vardags and Hylissang. They beat Cloud9 Eclipse in their first game, but lost against SK Gaming Prime to place 3-4th at the event. They won their first event later in the year at Insomnia 51. Unicorns of Love qualified for the EU Challenger Series 2014 Summer Series, with PowerOfEvil joining the team as a replacement for Xodiaz. This team would not come further than 5-8th place, with first round losses at both events. Despite that, the team qualified for the 2015 Promotion Tournament, where they beat Millenium to qualify for the 2015 EU LCS Spring Split. After being voted by the fans, the Unicorns got invited to IEM Season IX - San Jose, expectations were uncertain as it was their first LAN with their new jungler Kikis, who replaced founder Sheepy, who moved to a coaching position. Despite that, the team placed 2nd after beating Lyon Gaming and Team SoloMid, before losing against Cloud9 in the finals.

Heading into the 2015 EU LCS Spring Split, the same roster stuck together. After placing 5th in the regular season with a 9/-/9 record, they were matched up against Gambit Gaming in the quarter finals. With a 3-1 victory, they went on to beat SK Gaming 3-2 before losing 2-3 against Fnatic. During the 2015 EU LCS Summer Split, they once again ended with a 9/-/9 record, with Gilius joining halfway through the season. They placed 4th in playoffs after losing against Fnatic and H2K and lost out on Worlds 2015 after placing second in the regional finals.

Unicorns of Love made various roster changes heading into Spring 2016, signing Diamondprox, Fox and Steeelback. This new roster placed 5th in the regular season, ending with a 10/-/8 record. Despite their decent regular season, the team lost 3-0 against Origen in playoffs. This resulted in another 3 roster changes, replacing the spring signings. Move, Exileh and Veritas would join the team, with Diamondprox leaving to join Gambit Esports, Fox joining FC Schalke 04 Esports and Steeelback joining Team ROCCAT. After qualifying for playoffs with a 6/5/7 record, Unicorns of Love beat Giants Gaming before losing against G2 Esports and H2K to place 4th in the Summer Season. In the regional finals, Unicorns of Love once again placed second to miss out on Worlds 2016.

In the post-season IEM Oakland event, Unicorns of Love beat INTZ eSports, Team SoloMid and Flash Wolves to win the event and qualify for the IEM World Championship, where they placed 5-6th following losses against Flash Wolves and G2 Esports. Ahead of the 2017 Spring Season, the Korean players left the team to be replaced by Xerxe and Samux. This resulted in a 11/-/2 record in the regular season, securing a top 2 seed ahead of playoffs. In playoffs, they faced G2 Esports in the finals, losing 1-3. The same roster placed 5-6th in Summer 2017 after a loss against Misfits Gaming. They missed out on Worlds for the third year in a row, losing 2-3 against H2K in the 2017 Regional Finals.

Heading into 2018, 3/5ths of Unicorns of Love left the team. Hylissang joined Fnatic, Xerxe joined Splyce and Vizicsacsi joined FC Schalke 04 Esports. The new roster consisted of WhiteKnight, Kold, Exileh, Samux and Totoro. This would prove to be fairly unsuccesful, placing 10th place in the regular season. Fortunately, the EU LCS announced franchising for the next year and relegation was scrapped for 2018. The same roster placed 8th in Summer, finishing with a 7/-/11 record. It was later announced that Unicorns of Love did not acquire a slot for the newly announced LEC.

CIS Team[edit]

After a one split hiatus from League of Legends, Unicorns of Love announced a return to the game. Acquiring the LCL slot of Team Just, the German organisation acquired 4/5th of Vega Squadron's roster, debuting with BOSS, AHaHaCiK, Nomanz, Innaxe and Edward as their starters. The team won their debut LCL 2019 Summer Split, qualifying for Worlds 2019. They would go on to place 17-20th here, losing 2-3 against Splyce in the second round of play-ins. Ahead of 2020, Unicorns of Love replaced Innaxe and Edward with Gadget and SaNTaS, this would make the team even more dominant, winning the LCL Open Cup, LCL 2020 Spring Season and the LCL 2020 Summer Season. At Worlds 2020, the team managed to make the group stage, but went 0/-/6 and placed 13-16th.

Unicorns of Love continued their LCL dominance in 2021, this time turning to a full Russian roster by signing Lodik as a new botlaner after Gadget left to join mousesports. The team won another competition, and qualified for MSI 2021 as the LCL representative. Their spring championship also made them the most succesful team in the LCL, edging ahead of Gambit Esports who won 3 times. They placed 7-9th, after failing to win the tiebreaker against OCE team Pentanet.GG. The team signed Argonavt ahead of the 2021 Summer Season in an attempt to solve their botlane weakness, and managed to win the LCL 2021 Summer Championship to qualify for Worlds 2021. After a 21-22nd place exit, Unicorns of Love released all of their players to give them the possibility to take next steps in their career.
