Research & analysis of environmental policy in India’s transport sector
About us
The International Council on Clean Transportation is an independent nonprofit organization founded to provide first-rate, unbiased research and technical and scientific analysis to environmental regulators. Our mission is to improve the environmental performance and energy efficiency of road, marine, and air transportation sectors and fuels, in order to benefit public health and mitigate climate change. Air pollution, especially particulate matter, is a serious challenge in India, and transportation is a significant factor in the nation’s air-quality problems. Premature deaths from diseases directly related to air pollution in India total 1.1 million a year. The country’s vehicle fleet is expanding rapidly with sales reaching 21 million in 2016, and the number of vehicles on the road is expected to double to 200 million by 2030. In 2016, India adopted Euro 6/VI-equivalent standards to go into effect in 2020. The ICCT’s India staff works with policymakers to further mitigate vehicular air pollution. While most tier-1 Indian cities are grappling with air pollution, cities are mostly taking reactive planning measures for the same. Out of all the harmful pollutants, PM 2.5 is linked with various health issues among the young, elderly and vulnerable population. In cities like Pune, and Pimpri Chinchwad almost 50% of the PM2.5 comes from vehicular emissions. Proactive measures like Low Emission Mobility Zones (LEMZ), can help curb vehicular emission load, and thus, in the long run, can help reduce PM 2.5 by almost 85% in the above-mentioned cities. Low Emission Mobility Zones can be a great tool to curb vehicular emissions (cut tailpipe emissions at source), and improve alternate sustainable mobility solutions like Public Transport along with Walking and Cycling for people to shift to cleaner modes of transport. The Maharashtra #EVPolicy has identified #LEZ as a key strategy for its journey towards adopting cleaner modes of transport and has identified six target cities (Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Nashik, Chh Sambhajinagar, & Amravati) to push LEZ along with other EV policy goals. ITDP - India and ICCT India have been supporting three Maharashtrian cities - Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad and Chh. Sambhajinagar (Chh. Sambhajinagar supported with Urban Research Foundation), in strategizing for LEMZ and planning a roadmap. Do read the HT article to understand how three Maharashtrian cities are approaching the LEMZ. https://lnkd.in/dF_apvN8 Thanks, Badri Chatterjee for talking with us, and coming up with this comprehensive article! ☘ #LowEmissionZone or #LEZs in Maharashtra ☘ To combat #AirPollution and set a benchmark for #Urban areas across India, three cities in Maharashtra — Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad) — will establish low emission zones (LEZ) by 2026, marking a first for the country. Read the story by Badri Chatterjee in Hindustan Times quoting Vaibhav Kush and Moorthy Nair from The International Council on Clean Transportation. ICCT is helping in assessing and identify LEZs in the state. #CleanAir #CleanTransport

What is #BatterySwapping 🔋 and how can it potentially improve overall efficiency while reducing infrastructure constraints for #ElectricBuses 🚌? Bhaumik Gowande answers this in our latest blog, which includes details about how separating batteries from buses dramatically reduces the bus's capital cost because swapping operators own the batteries instead of the bus owner.
Can battery swapping accelerate the Indian private bus market’s transition to electric?
