As a seasoned Engg and Product Leader , I'm often asked: Is AI right for my product? There is NOT a simple "yes" or "no" answer to it! Because, It requires a very careful assessment and evaluation. Do not just blindly follow the train, till you calculate everything around it to aboard. Let's understand with some examples : -Assessing AI for the product means, understanding its potential benefits and drawbacks. Take, e.g., the 📊Recommendation Systems. AI-powered recommendations can significantly enhance user experience by personalizing content. However, they require vast amounts of data and sophisticated algorithms, which may not always be feasible or necessary for every product. -On other hand, let's consider 🔒Cybersecurity. AI has changed the way of threat detection, enabling real-time analysis of complex patterns to identify and mitigate risks. In this case, integrating AI isn't just beneficial but essential for staying ahead of evolving security threats. -Now let's look at chatbots: While AI-driven 🤖 chatbots can automate customer support and streamline interactions, they may "still" fall short in handling nuanced Q/A or providing empathetic responses. In such cases, a human touch might be more effective. -On the other hand, in industries like healthcare , 🏥AI-powered diagnostic tools have demonstrated remarkable accuracy in detecting diseases from medical images. In this domain, the benefits of AI in improving healthcare outcomes outweigh concerns about privacy or algorithmic biases. 👩‍🎓 As a Technical Product Manager, my role is to guide 🗺 product decisions based on rigorous analysis and strategic foresight. Before jumping on the AI bandwagon, let's critically evaluate its relevance and potential impact on our product's success. "Another reason Product Managers in India became bureaucrats has to do with two trends coinciding at the same time—Product Management becoming a career of choice for everybody, and the rise of frameworks as a tool to teach it to people. Combine the two, and suddenly all PMs in India start to look the same, sound the same, and speak exactly the same things—you simply can’t tell one apart from the other." Recently a young colleague asked me if I or any PM were to forget everything they know about Product Management and start again, how should one go about it? My suggestion to him was to just somehow manage to get a PM role and work with what comes to mind naturally. Don't focus too much on PM education initially. And if you fail, don't worry, that'll teach you the most.

❓Here's an open question - are you a product manager who has explored re-tooling as a creative technologist? 🧙‍♂️ 👀 I've met many PMs who, after being a senior product manager for a while, will question their career progression. I talked with several very senior PMs about this at a recent conference. If you go into group product manager or director roles to mentor and lead others, you quickly lose visibility on the things that were your skills, passions, and motivations in the first place. 🐬 On the flip side, I've seen many senior engineers shift from tech leads or development managers in favour of staff or principal engineer roles to free them up for the most creative, high-impact work. 🤖 I didn't know many creative technologists before I was at Shopify. They would say those two words together, creative technologist, and I would think, that's a description but not a role, right? Like, I work creatively with technology to discover potential solutions through prototyping ... 💌 Would love your thoughts. I appreciate this is a niche, reflective, PM post 😂 . The new thoughts are still spinning from ProductCamp Vancouver. Also, the power to create now is limitless. I had an opinion that PMs were being squeezed out (post-Brian Chesky's comments, and other market changes), but I'm now starting to see that with better Python skills, I can 10x myself to build out tools without an engineering team (pre-production). I loved this episode because it really spoke to the reality of what many PMs face in their daily practice. Gupta raises an interesting point about how all roads lead back to the feature factory, contrasted with the ideal of Empowered product teams as referenced in Marty Cagan's books. Many companies can be successful without having empowered teams. What Cagan highlights is that the the companies with stellar performance are more likely to have empowered teams. That distinction is significant. I agree generally with the advice in this episode. If you find yourself in this situation, embrace the factory and look for ways you can add value to that reality within your sphere of influence. You might find you're a happier PM. And if not, you'll have stories of impact you can share as you look for a place that will make you happy. And, above all, know that as an IC not all anti-patterns are yours to solve!

According to Gartner “To increase their relevance, product teams should develop their skills around a whole-product view of customer experience and business outcomes rather than internal business outputs.” They also list skills like Whole-product experience, Strategic alignment, Discovery & validation, Value projection etc as most critical to future proof product management skills (link below). Some of these skills are quite broad and a mix of subskills that, once developed, can serve as a horizontal to umbrella skills Gartner cited. One such critical skill I experienced is to work with ‘Ambiguity’. From ambiguity about defining 5+ year product vision to estimating value product/feature will add to top/bottom line, ambiguity marks its presence often in our lives and chores. That was my thought behind selecting the topic ‘Demystifying Ambiguity for Product Managers’. I was privileged to be in the room with such great women talent and have such heart to heart conversation about our individual experiences. Show stopper of the discussion turned out to be a much famous topic these days- How should product managers demystify Gen AI in their respective products? Interesting, that it must be many of product managers top ambiguous question these days. I thoroughly enjoyed talking to the group about this and several other areas. I speak to a lot of product managers, but yesterday was special. I co-hosted classes for product management aspirants at my alma mater SPJIMR SP Jain Institute of Management & Research along with Varun Nagaraj, the Dean of the institute. Varun, in addition to being the Dean, is a well respected product mentor and expert. And he lives up to one of the traits he mentioned about good product managers (which I agree wholeheartedly with) - being likeable. We had a good jugalbandi with me talking about practical aspects, and he adding practical insights + valuable theory. During the session, I spoke about some of my consulting assignments, and also left the aspirants with my set of 10 commandments for product managers starting their careers. P.S. - It's heartening to see that somethings stand the test of time. The institute may have changed a lot with new buildings and better facilities, but a lot of behaviours remain the same. During the period of 2005 to 2007 when I studied there, we showed our approval for good instructors and sessions by vigorously thumping the table. It was good to be at the receiving end this time. #productmanagement #spjimr

A meaningful part of good product management is good common sense, and while common sense is famously not all that common, it is also not the exclusive domain of product managers, which is precisely why it is silly when large orgs implicitly assume that only someone with the Product Manager title should do product work and a project cannot start unless there is a Product Manager allocated to it.
